Trade Travis Hafner?

Should the Tribe do it??? His trade value is off the charts right now. I think they should do it if they can get a young ace pitcher and a solid position player with lead off speed. Don't get me wrong Sizemore is a good player, but he's too good to lead off better to stick him in the 2 or 3 hole if you ask me. If they Tribe can trade Hafner to the Angels for Jerod Weaver or Ervin Santana and get Chone Figgins too, I'd say that'd be a good trade.

Short answer - No. The team just didn't do that well once Hafner was out of the lineup.

Long answer: I can actually see a set of circumstances were trading Hafner is not as bizzarre and stupid a concept as it might seem (allowing Maritinez, Garko and possibly Kouz to split first and DH) , but his inability to play first base, combined with the fact that he is probably more valuable to the Indians then to the team picking him up in a trade would make him extremely hard, if not impossible, to get a fair deal for....

You mention the Angels for Weaver or Santana and Figgins - honestly from the Indians perspective if you deal with the Angels and don't get one of their middle infield prospects then the deal is an incomplete deal, but i don't think the Angels would want to give up anymore than what you suggested

(when i first discovered this board a Tigers fan and i played lets pretend we are GMs - and he wanted to trade for Hafner - i wanted Omar Infante and two of Verlander, Zumaya and Granderson - i forget where he was but we were no where close to agreeing on anything - i suspect any trade discussion of Hafner would go something like that - Shapiro wanting x, y & z and the other team saying two of x, y or z)

If the Indians are going to trade anyone it'll most likely be Martinez not Hafner.

I would tend to agree with you but Cleveland's problem is pitching, and the divsion that they play in, if they can get a young pitcher to anchor that staff with CC I would say trade him. They can always sign a bat, pitchers are slightly harder to come by.

But pitchers are more hit or miss. Hafner is going to tear the cover off the ball for years to come. I stay stick with pronk.

That is true, however Cleveland needs to do SOMETHING so that they can stay competitive in the AL Central.

They can't always sign a bat like Hafner - those are once in a generation type players....

Everyone's problem is pitching - but i have a feeling the Angels are saving Santana and Figgins to make a run at ARod - and if they do that then they really aren't going to care much about adding Hafner....

Still if push came to shove, i was Shapiro and the Angels GM Bill Stoneman called me and said, " Santana or Weaver, Kendrick and Figgins for Hafner and a minor leaguer " i would at least consider it (Keep in mind though with the average Indian fan - the idea of trading Hafner would be tantamount to mutiny - reinforcing, in their minds at least, the concept that Dolan can't affoard to keep anyone.)

Now granted the Indians have been my favorite major league team longer than probably most of you folks have been alive, but i do think the Indians aren't as bad off as this years record would tend to show. I think they can easily stay competative in the central and keep Hafner and CC both. I thought that a trade of Hafner could help the team, but the hole he leaves in the offense would just be too much to overcome even if they did get Kendrick and Figgins both back.

Shapiro basically said that the closer for next years team is not currently on the roster - its going to be extremely interesting to see what the Indains do to improve the team next year - priorities:

1) Bullpen
2) Bullpen
3) Bullpen
4) 2b - depending on the succes of Trevor Crowe moving to second in the Fall League its either going to be a trade for a long term solution, or a sign of a short term solution
5) Bullpen
6) a bat - probably an OF (again this is depending on what happens to Trevor Crowe - if he doesnt make it as a second baseman then there is a shot Crowe could be playing for the Indians next season meaning the need for a bat in the OF lessens dramatically)
7) Bullpen
8) upgrade to starting pitching

oh and did i mention Bullpen?

What he said.

Look at the Mets ... their bullpen is a bunch of spare parts. We have some guys who can start and our bullpen issues were simple bad luck this year. Last year, the bullpen was our strength, and it was sheer good luck.

Next year, if he can move out of his own way a lil better, pronk will still be hitting the hell out of the ball, if they even pitch to him. I'm way more concerned with out lack of defense up the middle (except for CF), than our bullpen problems. Guys like Luna have no business even being in the majors.

Should be equally concerned about both - a decent fielding second baseman will help immensly - but so would a set back end of the pen...

I wouldn't, it would be very hard too find a replacement for that much productivity. If he was, I would think they get a pitcher from the Angels.

NO they should absolutely not ,because he is the heart of the Tribe's lineup and they would not get an equal valued player in return .

I agree that the bullpen is what needs work. Depending on how he develops, Crowe should be up in 2008 at 2nd. We can live with an Inglet type for a season. Hafner was the most valuable player in the AL in my opinion. The starting staff is fine, and in reality is starting to look up with the performances of CC. Westbrook had a good second half and we'll get a full season of Sowers to go along with Lee. Plus, Miller might be able to make the main roster by mid-season. Plus, Hafner's locked into a cheap contract.

DO NOT TRADE HAFNER EVER!!!

Forget about Crowe at second - he failed his one week trial and the Indians are keeping him in the OF....

Crowe is not finished at 2nd!

Crowe is going to start at 2nd in the Arizona Fall League that starts today, so don't write this off yet. No one can expect a player to move from the outfield to 2nd in one week.

Do you have a link for that?

Because i based my comment on this:

http://www.cantonrep.com/index.php?C...ID=312125&r=22

Quote:
Cleveland farm director John Farrell said the team has decided to leave the 2005 first-round draft pick in the outfield. The Indians briefly experimented with converting Crowe to second base in late August as well as during the fall instructional league.
Quote:
“We projected it would take two years for him to be adequate at that position,” Farrell said. “When we looked at the pace he was on as an offensive player, we weren’t willing to slow that down.”

Well that trumps me. I was going off of something I read on Milb.com a week weeks back but this is more up to date and from the farm director! I sir, apologize.

No problem.

Thats a benefit of an internet community like this - its hard for one person to keep ontop of all of this stuff.

But thats why i think solving 2nd base became a higher priority now - with Crowe possibly being in the big leagues as early as this year, adding a bat to LF just isn't that necessary.

Hey, I remember that....maybe cause I was the pretend Dave Dombrowski. I tried throwing in some other minor leaguers along with Infante and Granderson, for Hafner and Sizemore. As I refused to give up Verlander or Zumaya.....anyway....

.....the whole point of that thread is people overvalueing their better stars and perhaps the other side undervalueing them? Making people sugest things that are entirely unlikely in the "trading" world. From the outside looking in, I would doubt the Angels would take either trade...Maybe Sanatana and a minor leaguer? Although, teams are reluctant to give up quality starters...even for a stud like Hafner. You are likely looking at top shelf minor league talent (1-3 guys a stud farm pitcher, and a couple position players or 2 stud farm pitchers) and perhaps an average everyday player (someone to fill an immediate need).

Besides, all that you fellows need to do is make and convert a play for the bigger 2 guns out there (Zito, Schmidt) and hope CC stays healthy and you are right back in there....spot your closer, until you see who is out there and out of the race, you could grab sometime in August (like the ATL did with Wickman)....there you go. With your line up giving even a lesser starter 2-4 extra wins.....just think what it would give a stud? 3-5 W....4-6 W?

Santana and a minor leaguer for Hafner?

Well your point about teams overvaluing their own stars could be a correct one - but in this case i think Hafner just has more value to the Indians then he would to anyteam wanting to trade for him (& the nose dive the team took offensively after Hafner was sidelined for the year is a prime example)....

BTW - good luck in the series!!!

What are you, crazy? I don't ever see the Indians trading Hafner away. I don't think any trade will justify it for now.
