1997 World Series 25-man roster -- who's missing?

Here's what I have so far for the 1997 World Series 25-man roster:

12 Position Players, 11 Pitchers

Sandy Alomar
*Jeff Branson
#Tony Fernandez
*Brian Giles
Marquis Grissom
*David Justice
Manny Ramirez
#Bip Roberts
Kevin Seitzer
*Jim Thome
#Omar Vizquel
Matt Williams

Jaret Wright
Chad Ogea
Orel Hershiser
Charles Nagy
Jose Mesa
Mike Jackson
*Paul Assenmacher
*Brian Anderson
Eric Plunk
Jeff Juden
*Alvin Morman

Who were the other two guys on their roster? I checked stats for the DS and CS, and the extra guys didn't show up there either.

Thanks.

I wonder if Colon and Pat Borders were injured

Definitely Pat Borders .. he was the backup catcher on the WS roster; never saw any batting action, but he may have caught a late inning or two. Not sure about that.

How about Colon? Did he make the post-season roster?

Thanks for the comments so far.

Is there anywhere online that would show a definitive answer? There are other World Series rosters with gaps I'm trying to fill.

So far I've been using http://www.baseball-reference.com/po.../2005_WS.shtml and the CS and DS pages, if not all 25 played in the WS.

Colon had a pretty shaky rookie season in 1997 and I don't think he was added to the post-season roster. I had thought the other missing player was Richie Sexson but I think he was called up too late to be added.

I'm pretty sure the other missing player was Lopez, the 'why is he even here?' guy.

I don't think Borders appeared at all in the World Series. The Man of Glass was a little less brittle that year.

that was a pretty good team..I was wondering how many of them , are still in the majors ? Hopefully, the Tribe will be back on track, in 2007..and give the Tigers a run..along with the Sox and Twins..The central is a tough division

They were not that good a team on the field. Until about September 15th, that team played with as little amount of competitive fire as I have ever seen. This team was extremely fortunate to play in the weakest division in the Majors.

The 1997 Indians had no business being anywhere near the post-season.

I have to disagree, Wamby. Ever year there are teams with mediocre records that make the postseason due to a weak division.

The Tribe has been the victim of that setup more often than then they have benefited from it. Look at the 2000 team, for example.

It's like poker ... it doesn't matter so much how good your hand is, as when you show it.

Any team that makes it to the WS deserves to be there, bar none. And that was our best chance to win the damned thing too.

OK, although they lost six of their last nine

Two outs from winning it all is a pretty good chance

This is a statement that I completely disagree with. Here are a few teams that I do not feel should have been near the World Series: 1973 Mets, 1987 Twins, 1997 Indians, 1997 Marlins, 2002 Angels, 2002 Giants, 2003 Marlins, 2004 Red Sox, 2005 Astros.

I watched or attended virtually every Indians game in 1997, and no one will ever be able to convince me that that was a very good team.

I don't this setup has cost the Indians much. From 1996 until the end of the Charlie Manuel era it permitted the Indians to coast during the regular season and then try to turn it on in September. Their lousy post-season record shows that this was a bad approach.

There are more overrated teams, like the 92 Blue Jays

Like the Yanks have never done this?

I don't know about the Yanks, but it was bad strategy for the Indians.

How about the '72 Reds? Or the '77 Dodgers? The 1980 Phillies?

There are lots of teams since 1969 that made the WS without having the best record in the league. You ask me, the '84 Cubs should've been there ... they had a better record than the Padres. The Cubbies had a better record than the Giants in '89 too. I don't even like the Cubs, but you can see they got screwed by this playoff system.

The 1990 Reds, with the Nasty Boys, won it all. They were four games behind the Pirates. Barry could've been a WS hero that year, but no. And the Pirates were even better the next year before falling to the Braves in the NLCS.

You can either assume that the system we have sucks and everything was perfect before 1969, or you can infer that they should've had playoffs every year before 1969.

I think the system right now is lousy, and its worse then the system that ran from 1969-1993. The more teams in the post-season means the better chance of a watered down World Series. 1997 was only the start.

The best system is place was the one that ended in 1968.
