Wickman trade mean Martinez to 1B?

The tribe traded Wick for a catching prospect. Was this a move in an attempt to move Martinez to first base? I had heard they may move him to the corner.

He's been playing some 1B before the trade. His defense is too awful to be a catcher. Aquiring a catching prospect makes sense, just in case Shoppach doesn't pan out.

Ryan Garko has really gotten screwed, though. He was a catcher in the minors, but they moved him to 1B since Martinez isn't going anywhere. Now it seems Martinez is going somewhere. First base. I feel bad for Garko.

They used to say you could shake a tree and 1 bat and 99 gloves would fall out. It's time for the Tribe to shake the glove tree.

Vic could still do some catching, the way Mickey Tettleton used to; catch a little, play first and DH once in awhile when Hafner has the flu or a sore elbow.

I couldn't agree more. I was hopeful the Tribe would get a bit more for Wickie, but at least we saved some cash.

the problem is that Wick was a 10/5 guy and had right of refusal - that left him basically able to go to a contending team only

Milwaukee has a closer (but just picked up Cordero from the Rangers in the Carlos Lee deal) so that just left Atlanta...

and Shapiro wanted to move Wickman more than he wanted to risk holding onto him and losing him for nothing

now did anyone else notice that the Braves are collecting ex Indian closers - taht they just got Baez in the Betemit deal?
