Absoulety. When he was drafted, we were told he was only two+ years away. When he tore up AAA this year with a 1.something ERA, I, at least, was itching to see him in the bigs. He should develop into a solid #2 or #3 guy behind Sabathia and maybe Lee.

SOWERS EARNS FIRST MAJOR LEAGUE WIN

Ballard High School alumnus Jeremy Sowers picked up the first win of his Major League career Monday night with an impressive outing against the New York Yankees. Sowers, making his the second start of his young career, lasted seven innings scattering six hits and only allowing two earned runs, both coming off the bat of Jason Giambi, who connected for a two run homerun in the top of the first inning. Sowers struck out four, while only walking one, an intentional walk to Yankees slugger Alex Rodriguez. Sowers showed great poise and a strong mental approach after he settled down following his first half start to throw six consecutive shutout innings against one of the most talented offenses in Major League Baseball.



Sowers, who was originally drafted by the Cincinnati Reds in 2001 out of Ballard, opted to attend Vanderbilt University where he had an outstanding career for the Commodores helping him become the first choice for Cleveland in the 2004 draft following his junior season. He made the first start of his career against Cincy in a 4-2 loss on June 25th. Sowers started off well registering his first career strikeout at the expense of Reds power hitter Adam Dunn, adding to a very long list of pitchers who have struck him out. Sowers ran in to trouble in the fourth inning allowing two run homeruns to Dunn and Reds centerfielder Ken Griffey Jr., who became the first player to hit a homerun off Sowers. The scenario was similar to end of the movie Summer Catch, where the main character Ryan Dunn, a talented left handed pitching prospect, gives up his first career homerun to Griffey. Sowers lasted five innings in his debut scattering five hits, and allowing four earned runs, again all coming off homeruns from the bats of left handed hitting sluggers. All four runs came in the fourth and the six runs Sowers has allowed have come in only two innings. What is really impressive about that is that Sowers has pitched ten shutout innings out of the twelve frames he has pitched for the Indians in 2006.



Bob Feller, arguably the greatest pitcher in Cleveland Indians history, sent a congratulatory note to Sowers in the dugout during the Indians 19-1 victory yesterday. Feller is just one of many names on a long list of people who are very impressed with what Sowers has accomplished so far in 2006. With the victory against the Yankees, Sowers is 1-1 on the season with a 4.50 E.R.A., after going 9-1 at AAA Buffalo. Sowers, who pitched the Bruins to consecutive State Final appearances in 2000 and 2001, will make his next start on Saturday against the Baltimore Orioles.

I just have one question: If Bob Feller is "arguably" the greatest pitcher in Tribe history, who else is in the arguement? Cy Young, perhaps, though he did spend a great deal of his career in Boston.
