I have just learned that Mrs. Joe (Zanette) Hatten is quite ill. Sylvia Hatten, her daughter-in-law, has asked that I post this information on OUR Forum in the hope that some nice (and encouraging) emails from OUR Brooklyn Dodger Faithful will lift her spirits and perhaps work a miracle. Sylvia tells me that Mrs. Hatten recently received a letter from a young man who told her that JOE was his hero. It obviously made Mrs. Hatten's day! She was simply amazed that this young man even knew who Joe was, but it did wonders for her spirit.
BROOKLYN DODGER FANS are FAMILY to OUR Players and their Families. As such, in times when FAMILY needs US, WE rally to their side....just as WE did at OUR EBBETS FIELD when OUR DODGERS needed US. It would be wonderful for Mrs. Hatten to receive a warm note from each of US. She can reached at this email address: steinwaysyl@shasta.com Your kindness toward OUR Family is very much appreciated. If you have any questions, please let me know. c. |

Mrs. Joe Hatten needs OUR help!
Here's a newspaper article from 1953 minor league game in the Pacific Coast League, where the biggest brawl in baseball history happened that day and Joe Hatten was involved.

Thank you..........
To everyone who has sent get well wishes to my mother-in-law Zanette Hatten (AKA Zee) - THANK YOU! She keeps the letters by her side and shares them with her friends and visitors. We pray that she will return home one day soon. Her condition is improving, slowly, but improving! How do we keep her spirits up? For starters - we talk about their (Joe and Zee) Brooklyn Dodger days often
Ah, the stories! We never tire of hearing about these memories, even if we have heard the same story before Again, THANK YOU and please feel free to continue to send your well wishes. Zanette sends her love and thanks to all of you! Sylvia |

trade to Cubs?
I am so sorry to hear about Mrs. Hatten's illness, and I hope she recovers very soon; Joe was one of the stalwarts on the team when I was very young, but I remember him like it was yesterday. I also recall the big mid-season 1951 trade with the Cubs, and the photo of Joe and the other ex-Dodgers posing with him in the Cubs' dugout the day after the trade. I wonder how Mr. and Mrs. Hatten feld about being traded to Chicago. While Andy Pafko was the key pickup for the Dodgers in that trade and he was an excellent player, as Eddie Miksis pointed out many years later it was after the trade that the Dodgers' big lead over the Giants began to fritter away.
By the way, I believe I have (somewhere; I hope I am able to find it) a 1951 Chicago Cubs yearbook, revised after the trade, with a bio and picture of Joe in a Cub uniform. If it would cheer her up, I would be more than happy to send her a copy. |

"Every town had its hero," said Bill Dudding, Bancroft's baseball historian. "Lefty was our hero. Everyone went to the game when he was pitching."
Here's a link to a nice article with good photos too. http://desmoinesregister.com/sports/...ll/hatten.html Last edited by zman; 04-04-2006 at 12:04 PM. |

Like you, Zanette remembers those days like they were yesterday. We couldn't be more proud of Joe, even in a Cubs uniform. I would love to show Zanette a copy of the picture you mentioned. But, of course, nothing compares to seeing Joe in a Brooklyn Dodgers uniform. He remained friends with his BD buddies, so I'm sure that the move to the Cubs was a difficult one. He was a very generous man, and gave away lots of his memorabilia to fans. Unfortunately, he even had items stolen. I recall one story of how one of his award clocks was taken in to a repair shop and someone stole the engraved nameplate off of the clock!! As for how did they feel about the trade - Zanette told me that she was having lunch with some of the other players wives when Joe called to inform her of the trade. She said that the wives cried together and she spent the rest of the day in the comfort of her friends. It was truly a family! Since Joe isn't with us today to share his thoughts, I will continue to hope that his trade wasn't as painful as I assume it must have been One thing I have learned is that the Brooklyn Dodgers cannot be compared, replaced...or forgotten.Update on Zanette - she remains in the rehab hospital. She has improved, however, she/we were informed yesterday that she cannot return home. We are in the process of decision making. These days aren't easy ones, so your letters and posts are of great comfort. There are some special people from this forum who have made a world of difference in lifting Zee's spirts. Our family is grateful to all of you. Thanks again! Sylvia. P.S. I left you a PM. |

I sure wish her all the best and hope she can be cared for at home. We are taking care of my Mom here who was a big baseball fan. The Brooklyn Dodgers were America's team and many of us will always remember them that way. Joe Hatten served his country and his ball clubs with distinction I know. God bless and I hope she has some happy days still ahead of her, those baseball memories of a fine man and fine ballplayer will keep her going!

Please add my name to the long list of posters here who pray for her at this difficult time.
The Brooklyn Dodgers are long gone, but the generosity of spirit among their fans will never die until the last of us does. God bless! |

Finally - an update with better news.....................Zanette(Zee) has returned home!!!! Her strength improved and she was able to get back in the game!! Thank you to everyone who has contacted us regarding her condition. We pray that she continues to improve. Zee asked me to send her heartfelt THANKS to all of you. She is just thrilled to hear about the Brooklyn Dodger spirit. My husband and I recently attended a Hatten Family Reunion (Iowa). We stayed in Joe's hometown, where he got his start in baseball. It felt as if we took a step back in time because this entire town adored Joe and went to great efforts to welcome us. Every oldtimer had a Brooklyn Dodger story to share. Our next stop..........Brooklyn.

A friendly word of caution. The Brooklyn you knew is no more. If you visit the site of Ebbets Field, you may wish to bring company with you, and do so during the day. Still, with prudent precautions, you should enjoy your visit. God Bless! |

A thought: You may wish to contact the NYPD and connect to the 71st Precinct, which is the one (I think) that encompassed Ebbets Field. Perhaps when they know who you are, someone would escort you on your return visit to the sight of the old ballpark. |

A note to Don and Sylvia:
Don and Sylvia,
This is Mari Beth Ahart, youngest daughter of John and Jo Hatten. We met briefly at the family reunion in July, though you met so many people I am sure I am just a blur!! I was back in Spencer a couple weeks ago and saw the pictures and CD you had sent my parents. What a treasure it is for them! The pictures are amazing and the stories posted here are so interesting. I stumbled across this because my oldest daughter is talking about baseball cards in her class and she is taking a few of the things I have to school and we were looking for any additional things online. Not sure if you have been able to find the Life magazine with Joe's picture in it during the big fight. I just kinda stumbled on that as well. Just wanted to thank you for sparking the interest in my parents again!!! ~Mari Beth |
