Tommy Lasorda was on the Hannity & Coombs show this evening obstensibly to play up the World Baseball thing about to begin. Coombs made some sort of contact about the transfer of the Brooklyn franchise and Lasorda said, "Blame Robert Moses. He wouldn't give the land to build the ball park."

And so this campaign to change history to try to make the villain Robert Moses and not the O'Malley continues. It's enough to make somebody sick.

Tommy has always followed the party line when it come to the Dodgers. After the Angels restored their rightful name, Tommy was quoted as saying, "They will always be the Anaheim Angels to me."

Funny thing, they were California Angels for thirty years and LA Angels when they started for five seasons. To top that off, Tommy Lasorda was on the final 1957 Los Angeles Angels of the old PCL. But old Tommy was following the current ownership's party line.

I saw the same interview, and had the same reaction.

And it is true that you must consider the source.

I once had a revealing professional experience with TL at Shea involving the taping of a PSA when he was the Dodger manager. When the camera light went on, he was all enthused and friendly. Once the light went off , however, his smile vanished, and he just turned and walked away without a word.

What impression did he convey of himself?

I never heard of Robert Moses, but according to the Wikipedia write-up he has been criticized for the loss of neighborhoods in the inner city. Did the population shift have an impact on attendance at Ebbets Field?

Bob Moses was probably the most powerful man in NY for a good part of the late 30's, 40's, 50's on into the 60's. Officially he was the Parks Commissioner and headed the Triborugh Bridge and Tunnel Authority which ran a bunch of the inter borough bridges and tunnels in NY. He also liked public works projects and built many a highway in many cases gutting mostly poor people's neighborhoolds. He didn't care about who he hurt...as such he was the boss of so much and mayors quivered while in his presence. He also was responsible for such things as building parkways leading into the suburbs with overpasses sloped in such a way that buses carrying inner city residents could not use the parkways (nor could trucks)...he was some piece of work.

As noted, there was a 576 page book written about his life and times. Of those 576 pages, there is only 1 mention of the situation with the Dodgers. Yes he was opposed to giving land to a private organization and yes he offered O'Malley a tenancy in Flushing Meadow at terms imilar to what the Mets got (which most people considered a good deal BTW)...the slime ball who owned the baseball team wanted a handout of land of his choosing despite the fact it was owned by a private organization and while Moses made a point of opposing it, the reality is that it never could have happened anyway according to NYS law. For that reason, this business that he was responsible for the theft of the Brooklyn franchise is simply not true. There was only one person responsible for this.

You should also add that ROBERT MOSES was accountable to NO ONE (strange as that may seem)! All the public officials, including the Governor and the Mayor, were scared to death of him, so they simply kept their collective mouths shut! Matha531 is correct, there is only one person to blame for the theft of the Dodgers, and that is old Whale Belly.( I hope Elvis and EFG don't object to my use of the term Whale Belly). Moses never said he would block Whale Belly from buying the property, just that it wasn't going to be given to Whale Belly through condemnation proceedings, which is what Whale Belly wanted. Nelson Rockefeller
presented an option to Whale Belly late in 1957, that if Whale Belly really wanted to stay in Brooklyn, would have allowed him to do so. It would have allowed for the new ballpark to be built at Atlantic and Flatbush Avenues, Whale Belly turned it down.

Whale Belly is OK with me, Tony, as are any and everyone's opinions, including yours and Matha. I always enjoy yours and his posts. I only have a problem with the certain ugly sexual vulgarity that was very much out of place in this or any thread here. I've told my 10-year old cousin that this is a great place to learn about baseball. I just think we always need to keep in mind that kids visit BBF too and we should always use language appropriate for all ages. If bringing attention to that inapropriate language which the moderator either missed or ignored makes me a "Hall monitor", I'll gladly wear the badge.

If that's the case, then we're in agreement that the site should be kept clean. You may try keeping an open dialogue with Dodger Deb here and PM her of a post (including post #), linking the thread and why that post may be inappropriate. It usually helps.

You can also hit the "Report Bad Post" thing, which gets sent to us via email. We the Mods can't be everywhere, but the more you the regular forumers here are willing to work with us, the better a team we truly are.

Thanks for your honesty to owning up to this, as well as the removal of said word.

I knew I'd seen it in here awhile back (2 weeks ago?), but that it's now gone. Hopefully this matter will die down soon (right now would be fine).
