Brooklyn Dodgers by the numbers

When you hear a uniform number pertaining to the Brooklyn Dodgers you probably think of a certain player, I know I do, but sometimes that player didn't always wear that number. I'll use Gil Hodges when he came up in 1943 he didn't wear number 14, what number did he wear. He isn't the only famous Dodger to wear a number different then his regular number. I thought we could have some fun with this and bring back some memories

He wore number 4 in 1943. A number made famous by none other than The Duke, but worn before him by another Brooklyn great Dolph Camilli.

Ok here goes;
What future Hall of Famer is the first player in Dodger History to wear #4?

Hack Wilson at the tail end of his great career wore number 4 for the Dodgers in 1932-33

Right! Many people don't even know he played for the Dodgers. While much is made of today's players not playing their entire career in one city, this was just as prevelant in the early part of the century. Wilson being one example. Your turn.

I know that but that is another part of our great Brooklyn Dodgers History, it is fantastic that people like you are so astute on Dodgers history.
What Dodgers great is the only one in Brooklyn Dodgers history to wear the number 56.

I was about to say Drysdale, but I think this was a spring training or early season number for Campy

You're right on it again it was an early 1948 number for Campy.
We all know Gilliam wore number 19 for the Dodgers, what pretty good left handed pitcher who batted righthanded wore it in the late 40's early 50's.

Joe Hatten. Here's one for you what relatively famous player wore both 7 and 77 in at least two seasons in the 40's I believe.

That's right His son and daughter in law come on this site.
What number did Carl Furillo wear in 1946 and Tommy Lasorda wore in 1954.

29. Wow didn't know that about Hatten. It is great to hear that family of former Dodgers come on this site. Wonder if Newk or Duke check it out.

You're right again number 29, Joe's family is looking for any pictures or memorabilia of him. I don't know if any old Dodgers come on here. What other number besides 6 did Carl Furillo wear in 1946.

29 and 5. I think he may be the only Dodger to wear 3 numbers in one year.

According to one source, Chuck Dressen wore #7 in every year with Brooklyn except for 1940 when he wore 77!

Actually the answer I was looking for was Joe Medwick, who wore 7 and 77 in 1940, and then alternated between 6,7,and 77 for the next 3 years.

You and Flatbush Flock are good, Joe Medwick came over in the middle of 1940 and stayed till the middle of 1943, Medwick must have paid Dressen for the number in 1940 then he switch to 77 in 1940-41 then Medwick switch to 6 in !941-42 then back to 7 in 1943. I also see that Dressen wore 7 in 1943, I wish my aunt was alive she was good friends with Charlie's wife she would know, we'll have to look into who wore 7 in 1943.

Medwick wore 7 in 1943, his last year in Brooklyn. Guess what player wore it in 1944?

Nice, but you ruined my trick question. "what player wore it in 1944" The answer is of course no player wore it the manager did.

I didn't know it was a trick question, but it was a good one.
Lets get back to the other night about who wore 3 numbers in one season there is one other player besides Carl Furillo.
