After the game

Going to Dodgers game was an event for our family, my uncle would pick my grandfather, my father,uncle Pete and me up then head down Bedford Ave from Gerritsen Beach to see our beloved Dodgers play. We had to get there 2 hours before game to see batting practice and get autographs, my uncle Pete worked as a special cop at Ebbets field from 1945-50 and he was friends with Gil so every game we got to talk to Gil. Starting at 5 years old in 1952 I always wore my miniature Gil Hodges uniform and as I out grew it I wore a Dodgers tee shirt. Sometimes I would go on the train with my grandfather to see the Dodgers play, as we got off at Franklin Ave we smelled the bread from the factory and walked a few blocks to Ebbets. After the Game if it didn't end too late and especially on weekends we'd go to the "roast beef joint" Brennan and Carrs on Nostrand Ave and Ave U for there tremendous double dip roast beef sandwich. The adults would have a beef and a beer, of course I had a coke with my beef, they are still there if you never experienced a double dip beef from Brennan and Carrs please try it. Does anyone else have stories about there days at the Dodgers games and after the game.

ANOTHER good post, Kramer 47.

I'd always wondered about that, since we left the area immediately right after the games. I did not know the immediate area well, so I'm unaware of what it had to offer. AllI do recall is the Fitzsimmons bowling alley/bar near the park.

As I grew older and learned about the post game antics of pro athletes, I wondered whether there were "groupies" and the sort who haunted Brooklyn Dodgers. I guess there were, but have no idea where their dalliances took place.

We didn't stay long after games we headed back to our home territory and the Roast Beef joint. I was almost 11 when the Dodgers left us so like you never heard of groupies for a few more years. I was told by a buddy who worked at Ebbets like my uncle did that they had to contend with alot of girls wanting to get to know the players. They had all sorts of characters at Ebbets Field that's what made it such a great place.

I'm fired up to try this place the next time I am in that part of Brooklyn! I hope the quality is the same as in the old days. The description brings to mind Junior's, the place with the cheesecake and Reubens and such near the Brooklyn Bridge end of Flatbush Ave.

I've been to Juniors a great place with the best cheesecake, the roast beef joint has always been good remember ask for the double dip and you'll need a knife and fork to eat it. While in the neighborhood go over to Leon's bakery and buy the strawberry short cake it is the best, Leon's is on Knapp St at Gerritsen Ave. Just talking about this stuff my mouth is watering here.
