personal given name teams, redux

Unfortunately, one of our moderators tried to transfer the thread where I invited everyone to create personal teams based on their given (i.e. not surname) names from history to trivia, and in the process sent the thread into the unexplored vastness of cyberspace. So, we'll try again. Remember, you can't work off anyone else's team, and surnames aren't usable (if we've got a Robinson, they'd be close to winning with that surname alone with Jackie, Frank and Brooks, among others). My given names are Jim and Fred. We can be reasonably liberal in this, since it's all for fun anyway. My team:

c--Jim Sundberg
1b--Jimmie Foxx
2b--Jim Gilliam
3b--Jimmy Collins
ss--Jim Fregosi

of--hard to pick from the following:
Jim O'Rourke
Fred Clarke
Jimmy Wynn
Fred Lynn
Jimmy Ryan
Jim Rice

sp--Jim Palmer
sp--Jim "Catfish" Hunter
sp--Jim Bunning
sp--Jim Kaat

RP--Fred "Firpo" Marberry

While my team probably won't be the best, it wouldn't get embarrassed too often. Have fun!

Jim Albright

I like my pitching and first baseman against his, but I'm sure that you could win some pennants with that group.

Forgot about Robert "Lefty" Grove. That gives me 4 Hall of Fame starting pitchers!

"Johns" and "Hughs"

Well, I'm "John Hugh", so I get the following, though I'm sure there's some great ones I'm missing.

c-- Johnny Bench
1b--Johnny Mize
2b--Johnny Evers
3b--John McGraw
ss--Hugh Jennings (thank god for my middle name, or I might be stuck with Johnnie Lemaster!)

OF --
Hugh Duffy
Johnnie "Dusty" Baker
Juan Gonzalez (if Utter Chaos gets "Roberto" for Robert, I get Juan)

sp--Johnny Podres
sp--John Clarkson
sp--Juan Marichal
sp--John Smoltz

RP--John Franco

UT: John "Pop" Lloyd
DH/PH: John "Boog" Powell, John Olerud

I don't have a problem with that.

A few more to help your bench:
Johnny Damon, Johnny Callison, Johnny Peskey, Johnny Sain.

And finally John Peter Wagner also known as Honus.

OF: Duffy Edward Lewis (if that's allowed)

After my starting pitchers, it gets kinda hard. So many people have Edward as a middle name, but not many good non-pitchers have it as a fist name. Also, Mark does not seem to be too popular among ballplayers.

That's not the way I had in mind, but if others care and the popular will is to overrule that verdict, I'm OK with it.

I hope that other people agree with me, then I could make an (almost) all-HOF team.

That actually is a team someone else posted for me after I decried the sorry state of the team I originally came up with. unfortunately, if I am going to be a purist (which I am) I cannot claim any of the following because they are not Allens (my middle name) or any derivation of the spelling:

Allie Reynolds
Al(bert) Spalding
Al(phonso) Downing
Al(ois) Leiter
Al(fred) Holland
Al(fonzo) Lopez
Al(bert) Rosen
Al(oyisius) Simmons
Al(onza) Bumbry
Al(bert) Kaline
Al(bert) Oliver
Al(phonse) Smith

So it leaves me with this team:
SP - Allan Russell
SP - Allen Sothoron
SP - Al Fitzmorris
SP - Alan Benes
SP - Allan Anderson
RP - Al Hrabosky
RP - Keith Foulke
C - Alan Ashby
1B - Keith Hernandez
2B - Keith Lockhart
3B - Al Gallagher
SS - Alan Trammell
OF - Al Zarilla
OF - Al Scheer
OF - Alan Bannister

A couple of almost HOF'ers, another all-star and a bunch of whos?. Not much of a team.
