I don't know how safe or effective these training methods are as I haven't tried them yet, but they seem reasonable.

I assume you're talking about speed for baseball. I split the team in half and put one group behind 2nd base and the other behind home. On "go" the 1st runner takes off for 2nd or home. When the first runner hits home or 2nd, the next runner on his team takes off. The first team to finish all runners wins. This is exactly what you want, short fast bursts of speed. And, the kids love competing in this way. They'll play over and over til they're all falling down.
