2006 Topps
I found these pics of 2006 Topps (sorry I can't get them to show in this post). What do y'all think of this year's design?
At first glance it seems ugly. Can't put my finger on why.

Call me sentimtal
I have been increasingly dissapointed with the designs since about 1991. I really hate the gloss finish a lot of thecards have gone too, that is why I have gotten more into the Archives and throwbacks. This particular design looks like they are trying a retro type border which I actually like, I do not like the name label and team label. Most importantly I would like to see the reverse.

man, im so glad i stopped collecting cards since mid-eighties...the cards are so lame now...too many friggin companies!
the designs are terrible (cant even read whats on there for 2006, they look like a kids cereal box for FRUITY PEBBLES) i remember being so excited when seeing the new TOPPS sets for the years...now they all look the same. i hate the quality of them too..miss the good ole' cardboard stock they used to come with. and whats with this game used stuff..so stupid..like a thread from one of the players pants..c'mon. how do you know its not just a piece of thread from a old sock taken out of THE SALVATION ARMY! stupid idea to begin with...what wiz came up with that lame-ass thought! the charm to the cards is long gone...and the designs look like there was no thought put to it at all....real lame. favorite designs for TOPPS from the past (the "REAL" ones) 1971 1972 1975 1980 (although i always hated the printed autographs issued on sets) 1984 1986 THEY DONT MAKE 'EM LIKE THEY USED TO! feel sorry for the young kids today...no wonder all kids do nowadays is sit and play stupid video games. what a shame.... The idea of owning pieces of jersey, bat, gloves and autographes on sportscards was a fantastic idea. Some early mistakes have been fixed and allowed many more people to own a true piece of baseball history.
A piece of Babe Ruth bat on a card.Simply awesome. How else would the casual fan afford to own a pice of their favorite player/hero. The card designs over the years have changed from nice to so so to plain ugly to very high tech.In 1989 Upper Deck raised the bar for sportscard design and quality but in 1991 Topps with the introduction of Stadium Club brought hi tech with action and design. I know everyone has a favorite set but cards have come along way just as our old sports snickers have. I hear many people say that there are to many card companies and product.Simple fact of collecting. You can not collect everything unless your Bill Gates.Pick and choose what cards are right for you. 2006 Topps looks so so but most have been in favor of the new card design. re: ugliness factor....
Card collecting is a new hobby I picked up two years ago.
IMO, the cards are ugly because I like the white border of the previous year's Topps Collections. Yes, these do look like a throw-back to the 80's. BUT: one persons ugly is another persons elegance, and I think pre-2006 Topps had a certain simple elegance about them. But hey, I'm no expert, and I'm certainly not a purist when it comes to cards. I collect them only because I like them. |

I personally prefer many of the current base card designs to the ones from the past. Maybe it is because the current ones are pretty much what I grew up with, but I don't know. Anyway, yeah, those 2006 Topps cards are horrific.

2006 Topps

1) Over-done banners 2) dull, 1981 color schemes Card over-design has always been the big risk for Topps. Usually they avoid it altogether and get accused of being boring. In fairness, when they have gone after it, they've occassionally had some nice results - 1975 comes to mind. And then, of course, there's 1972 which is so outrageous that it's actually beautiful because it's so obscene. This isn't the case. These color schemes remind me of sports gear from 1981. You know, painters caps at basketball games, styrofoam mesh on the front of little league hats, and those rainbow shirts with your college's name underneath it. Take a look at the WS video from 1982 and you'll know what I mean. Just awful. It didn't look good the first time around. Why would they think it would work now? I generally like the Topps designs - even the boring ones. In my mind, the more they look like a kids toy, the happier I am. But these look like after-thought, cereal box cards, not the kind of high quality, *contemporary* design look that I expect as a customer. |

I don't like the design. The 2004 and 2005 cards also had white backrounds. They look too much alike. I also don't like the gloss on the cards.
