Number 1: Fire the Padres GM. How stupid can he be, he trades Brian Lawrence and cash to WAS for Vinny Castilla.Now Lawrence is with the Nats and has a contract option for 2007. If the Nationals exercise their option, the Padres have to pay half his alary plus incentives.

Number 2: Geoff Blum(former expo) HE STINKS!!!

Signing 33 year old 3B who has a career .705 OPS doesn't seem like the move that improves a club. Compound that with the Castilla trade and Tower seems to have los this grip on reality. Why didn't they just try to resign Randa??

They signed Blum for his versatility not for his bat. He can play every infield positin, switch hit, is an outstanding teamate and brings alot to a club. Those are things you as a fan don't understand, and why you pay to watch the game and not make decisions.

that may be, but his skill set is to be below average offensively at multiple positions, and slightly better than average defensively at multiple positions.

as a 3B, SS, or 2B he is going to be a black hole offensively...not really as much a switch hitter as he is a switch batter. but at 3B and 2B, he's going to be better than the average defender at those positions. at SS he really seems miscast though. as long as he's not starting more than one or two games a week and/or hitting higher than 8th in the order he's a decent reserve to have around.

more or less, my point is that guys like Blum are easily replaceable at the MLB level. fortunately for him though, he hit a clutch homer in the World Series so that'll translate into extra cash and extra playing time.

This is very far from the truth. Starting and staying at one position is MUCH easier than having to be prepared to play a different position every night. Why do you think good utility players hang around forever.

No, Geoff might not be a natural shortstop but the fact that this is probably the 2nd most demanding position on the field and he can get the job done there speaks for itself.

If he is so easily replaced, then why did the WhiteSox trade for him and why did the Padres jump on the opporunity to re-sign him? Until you spent time in players shoes that has to be prepared to play a number of different postions at any given time you can't understand.

This guy can pinch hit for you from both sides of the plate and play any of the 4 infield positions at any given time. If he's so easily replaced, find me 10 more guys that have proven they can do this at the Major League level.

laziness. but all teams do this, and have all throughout the game's history. that's why a guy like Juan Castro not only keeps getting a starting job, but can get a million bucks at the same time. that and he's almost a name now because of the World Series.

Mackowiak can't play short and hits lefthanded.
Mabry can't play the middle and doesn't switch hit.

I like your list. But very few of those players would I switch for Geoff, and many of the players on the list are going to cost much more money than geoff. And Very few of them can play all 4 positions, or have experience doing it.
