JC, this is something I do here and there. I usually send out bunches, then go for months without sending any. My responses have been decent, not great, depite the fact that I don't usually go for marquee players.

One thing I'd like to do is to write to former negro league players, but I don't know where to find their addresses. Do you have a source for these addresses? Any info would be great, thanks.

I've done this before. Back in the late 80's I got players like Will Clark, Cecil Fielder, Gary Gaetti, David Cone and Dennis Eckersley through the mail. I have always sent one or 2 cards with an SASE (of course) straight to the stadium. I also tried Tony Gwynn and Kirby Puckett, and both were returned and marked "return to sender." It's a crap shoot to say the least.

I have one success with Gwynn. Signed one card.

Hey JC. . .

my registration with hobbyinsider.net was revoked. Apparently, my application didn't meet their lofty standards.

Here's the form that I used to get Jack Smalling's 13th address list. http://www.baseballaddresses.com/coverpage.html
I love it.

jchurlbert: I have been collecting autographs through the mail since the late 80's. I have a ton of autos on baseball cards, signed 5x7's, and 8x10's that retired and current players have sent me through the mail. (Of course I send two cards for them to sign, and they mostly send me other goodies back). It's a great hobby. If anyone needs advice on who signs, and who doesn't sign please feel free to post here or private message me.
~Tony~
P.S.
I received one card signed in the mail today from Ned Garver who started in 1948. Check out his stats here: http://www.baseballlibrary.com/baseb...Garver_Ned.stm

I do TTM also, I have send cards to get signed for about 2 years, and have over a thousand successes. I have send over a dozen baseballs to get signed as well, with successes from George Brett, Robin Yount, Duke Snider, Bobby Doerr, Billy Williams, Bill Mazeroski, Lee MacPhail, Ryne Sandberg, Carlton Fisk, and George Kell. I am also working on complete signed sets, including the tough 1979 TCMA and 1988/1989/1990 Pacific Legends sets. I am slowly, but surely getting the 2004 Topps baseball set done, as well as the 2003, 2004, and 2005 Topps Fan Favorites sets. If anyone is interested in trading, please shoot me a pm, I have numerous signed cards to trade.

Adresses by mail

I have just started to send auto request through the mail, but haven't had much success. I usually only get replies from minor leagers and prospects.
I want to send baseballs and 8x10's to the players, because those are worth more, but I'm afraid I won't get replies, and if I don't get replies, that'll just be a waste of money.
Any tips?
Please send me a private message.

Jack Smalling's #13

I am about to buy this book, Autograph Collector's handbook #13, but I was wondering if it would be the best to buy. Any other current lists you'd recomend, or how this book is?

Harvey's book is by far, much, much better than Smallings. His address is here:

Sports Address Lists

He has much more information than Smallings and actually tests a lot of the addresses himself.

I've been collecting TTM autographs since 1993. In that time I've managed to get more than 350 different guys to sign, concentrating mostly on current and ex-Braves and natives of southwest and southside Virginia. I use Harvey's list, which is definitely the best one out there.

I wouldn't say Smalling's is a bad list, but Meiselman's is better. I've never seen a list that's anywhere near as comprehensive. I've only been able to pin down one Major Leaguer (past or present) that there's no listing for, and that's Ryan Zimmerman, who's only about 20 games into his big-league career. Most of the guys who debuted in 2005 that I've looked up are in there.

question

I don't really understand what c/o's are. Do you only put c/o's (in care of...) if the person you want works or plays with the organization? Or can you do it for anyone. Example- I send a letter to the White Sox that reads: Carlton Fisk c/o ChicagO White Sox. Will the organization send it to Fisk? Or should I only send to player's home addresses?

I knew that, but what I'm trying to ask is when should you send a ttm with a c/o, or when to send it to a home address. Like, if you sent a ttm to let's say, duke snider, would you send it to his home addy or c/o HOF?

Sorry Didn't read all of your note. It doesn't matter weather you put c/o in front or not, it will go to that person as long as you have their name above their address on the envelope

a little help?

anybody with addresses or contacts from the players from the late 70s to late 80s? id like to try getting some sigs through the mail for the first time.
if anybody can help me find some of these players thru past experiences where it was easy and authentic.
im looking to send out some of my TOPPS BASEBALL cards to be signed from sets 1981,1984,1985....any help out there, without paying big time money to join contact clubs like MLB ALUMNI ASS. or that address book thing.
i have some signed cards that i can give you in exchange for some addresses.
i have some doubles from TOPPS 1981,1984,1985 plus some other additions like any DONRUSS,FLEER and other TOPPS years availible for trades......

New to the forum, first of what I hope will become many posts!

I have collected autographs through the mail off and on for years...I find it to be a cheap, easy way to enjoy to the fun of collecting cards and following the sport. Opening up the mailbox on any given day and finding a little "treat" sure helps break up the usual junk mail and bills!

I mostly send to either the team's home stadium or spring training site, or a minor league affiliate. I have send some items to retired players (I have a now out of date copy of Smallings book).

I've also taken a few shots in the dark...sent one to Bill Lee recently addressed just to "Bill Lee, Craftsbury Vt" with the zip, and it not only found him, but he sent back my card signed. He even threw an extra 2 cent stamp on my SASE, since postage had gone up since I sent the card.

Most recently, two nice autographs arrived from Red Sox manager Terry Franconia this week.

I have probably 150 or so autograghs from about about 75 different players, a large percentage of them Red Sox.
