Walt Disney World Ebbets Field

I talked with Terry Soldwisch President of Home Run Derby who is puting together the Brooklyn, USA Ebbets Field Hotel and Resort
down in Florida.
They have three locations they are looking at right now for this $400 million project.

The group has the the original blueprints and will build an exact replica of Ebbets Field with a rotunda that may serve as the lobby.
They will also have the famous signs on the outfield walls but haven't decided if it will be from the 1947 era or early 50's.

Those of you that sent away for the conceptual brochure will notice how massive this project is.
They will aslo have a Bleacher Bum Cafe in left center field, a Brooklyn Paramont on their Empire Blvd, Bushwick timeshares and a Coney Island along with a convention center!

They are even making sure they get the right color bricks for the Ebbets Field (hopefully not from E-Bay).
So how does this make you feel?

Intrigued Paul... All I can say is if they do it right and spare no expense, then I shall be forced to make this pilgrimage to my Mecca...

They'll rebuild the Rotunda exactly?? Wood & Iron seats??? All 33K+ of them?! I find this very hard to believe! Will the facade be exact? How *exact* is "exact"?

Can I still stand on Bedford and wait for a HR ball in the gas station across the street?

Will I be able to walk up through Prospect Park when I get my first glimpse of the lighting towers just above the trees?

If it's just some slouch replica, then who really cares, but if they're really going to do it up, then that would be phenomenal. I don't think that for $400 million they can rebuild the park with the sort of craftsmenship they had back in the early 1900's, and is that price tag including their little Coney Island Exhibition as well as the other stuff you've mentioned? I don't think the original had a cafe in center field.

I guess we'll have to wait and see...

What was that website again, or how do I get the brochure?

I welcome any memorial to THE BROOKLYN DODGERS, Brooklyn, my old nieghborhood and my yout.

Until I see similar "monuments" to the Polo Grounds and other long forgotten former ballparks, I can only assume that only EBBETS FIELD and OUR BROOKLYN DODGERS will always have a lasting appeal to so many.

How does that saying go? ... YOU BUILD IT AND THEY WILL COME!

Unfortunately there's one thing that we all remember that they will never be able to replicate ... the distictive smells of the lush green grass and hot dogs cooked in beer.

The guy I talked to at Hr-derby also said the folks he talked to (that went to Ebbets Field) said Ebbets Field "was a hole" and "smelled bad".

I told him that's not the impression I got. I also mentioned this web site to him and how much the people loved it.

It seems odd that he would say that while trying to build a nostalgic park for tourists. He seemed to think it has been romanticized by others and that is the draw.

It will be interesting to see if this ever gets off the drawing board.

HE sounds like the guy who wrote THAT editorial in Vero Beach!

If HE feels that way.....WHY is he bothering at all!

HOW could someone, who is spending ALL that MONEY to build it, really believe that it was a "hole" that "smelled bad"? Anyone who would say that, or believe it, is totally out of touch with the reality that was OUR Ebbets Field.

Perhaps his time would be better spent talking to people like US, who "lived" a good part of OUR life in OUR enchanted palace called EBBETS FIELD!

Once again, IF YOU WERE NOT THERE WITH US.....YOU SHOULD NOT BE COMMENTING ON WHAT YOU "THINK" IT WAS LIKE! HE should probably hire US to market the place for him!

I just hope this isn't another scam. There was a group that was going to rebuild Ebbets Field in I believe Connecticut and that never happened. Now their web address is for sale. www.ebbetsfield.com. Maybe we could all chip in and buy it.

The "folks he talked to (that went to Ebbets Field)" were probably fans of the Visiting Teams that were getting beaten by OUR DODGERS.

I doubt if he talked to a single BROOKLYN DODGER Fan.

According to the recording secretary's minutes, at the final face-to-face meeting between Walter O'Malley and Robert Moses, O'Malley, in a last desperate attempt to extract a concession (before Moses came down from the mountain and O'Malley called for a little traveling music) described Ebbets Field as a "hole" that "smelled bad." Poetic license? We'll have to ask our Poet Laureate about that. But it's right there in the minutes. Maybe that's where the Florida guy got it from.

Now, as for Deb's "enchanted palace".....I want to ask the Poet Laureate about that one, too.

The Dodger Debs had their photography sessions in that part of Ebbets Field known as "The Enchanted Palace." Those pictures today are extremely hard to find; Jackie42 managed to find one. Knowing that these sessions were recording important moments in the history of Brooklyn Dodger fandom, I once tried to crash a shoot but to my horror discovered that the Debs were not only armed with baseball bats that they had been using as props but that they also knew how to use them. I still have a scar over my left eye, a painful reminder of my ill-conceived attempt to have my picture taken with the fabulous Dodger Debs. Alas, I got but a glimpse of that part of the ballpark known as "The Enchanted Palace," but it will forever haunt me.

Happy to see people were/are following our progress. We do have a site picked out, right across the street from the Gaylord Plams, Orlando.

As far as the comments above, nobody said Ebbets Field smelled like a hole or was a hole. Our research (mainly from Peter Golenbock referrals) showed that Ebbets Field had a "peculiar" aroma to it, unlike any other ball park of its time or of today.

... It is this type of information we gather to ensure the sights and smells of Ebbets Field are re-created.

Having literally lived in OUR Ebbets Field, and inhaled it day after day, I can tell you that is a true statement. The "aroma", or smell, was like no other ballpark I have been to, and I have been in most of them. I have never lost this smell, strange as that may seem. If I close my eyes and concentrate and whiff in the air....there it is....it has never left me!

Ersatz doppelganger stadium it may be but Citi Field still has more legitimate claim to honour the legacy of Ebbets Field than some Florida theme park.

Terry never got the money together. The whole thing was way over the top. Plus, a lot of people have never heard of Ebbets Field. Not everyone grew up in Brooklyn.
