Changing Uniform Numbers

Most Players use at least Two Uniform Numbers during their Career. As a Rookie they are assigned a Number and if they become Stars they usually get to Pick a Uniform Number that will become well know especially if they make it to the Hall of Fame.

Question:

What Player(s) do you know have worn at least FOUR different Numbers during his/their Career(s)?

The object is to try and find out what Player has the distinction of wearing the MOST different Uniform Numbers during his Career.

I'd like to submit Bill Buckner and Rick Dempsey. Buckner wore 5 numbers in his career (38, 22, 16, 6, and 14), and Dempsey wore 7 numbers (8, 38, 25, 46, 24, 17, and 14).

How about Bobo Newsom, with 11? He wore 27, 21, 12, 8, 15, 33, 00, 16, 34, 48, and 20. That'll be hard to beat.

Why aren't you counting Mickey Vernon? He wore 34, 29, 5, 4, 3, 44, 6, 8, 15, and 42, for a total of 10.

I also have to mention Paul Lehner, who in 7 years wore 7 numbers: 19, 7, 5, 15, 1, 38, and 37.

2 more 10-number wearers: Pete Appleton, who wore 23, 17, 21, 33, 18, 10, 48, 26, 27, and 36, and Bill Wight, who wore 30, 28, 29, 15, 18, 27, 17, 47, and 45.

Tearforamariner has listed the Top FIVE Players with the MOST different Uniform Numbers:

1. Bobo Newsome with 11

2. Mike Morgan with 11

3. Mickey Vernon with 10

4. Pete Appleton with 10

5. Bill Wight with 9

NOTE: You must have counted #30 twice (Yankees 1946 and Indians 1955). More Players with ALL double digits.

I'd say Lou Gehrig.

Thought I'd recycle an old message and update it some.

Bob Miller had 15 different numbers (15, 17, 21, 23, 24, 26, 30, 32, 33, 35, 36, 37, 42, 45, 49)

Rudy Seanez with 11+ (17, 32, 37, 38, 40, 43, 47, 48, 54, 57, 64, plus 42 for 1 game)
George Brunet with 10 (9, 22, 27, 28, 30, 33, 34, 39, 43, 53)
Ken Brett with 10 (15, 18, 24, 25, 30, 31, 34, 36, 38, 42)
Tito Francona with 10 (3, 8, 9, 11, 14, 19, 23, 24, 36, 44)

What about Gary Sheffield? I know he's played with a bunch of different teams but I never paid attention to his uniform number as he went from team to team.

Ricky Henderson played for a lot of different teams, but I believe he pretty much got to wear his customary #24 everywhere he went. Except when he played for the Mariners in 2000. He wore #35 with the Mariners.

I think Sheffield only used 10, 11, and 3. But I'm not sure.

Sheffield also wore 1 as a rookie with the Brewers and 5 for part of his 1998 Dodger season. He also wore #42 for a game in 2007 in honor of Jackie Robinson but since that was a special case it shouldn't be considered.

So Sheffield wore 5 different numbers in his career. You can find a player's numbers by going to baseball-almanac under Player|The Ballplayer and scrolling to almost the bottom of the player page.

Rickey Henderson also wore 5 different numbers: 14, 22, 24, 25, and 35

Thanks for the info. I hadn't realized Henderson shuffled numbers that much.

when traded to the athletics from the yankees on 21 june 1989, henderson's #24 that he wore with the yankees was already being worn by catcher ron hassey.

henderson hadta wear #22 for just a couple'a weeks before being able to convince hassey to surrender his #24.
