Wholehardely agree.

Shea suffered from an indifferent City, and as a result, became obsolete when other cites began to build new ballparks.

Shea before Doubleday / Wilpon was an just beautiful. The seat change (and the color change that went with it) was the first strike.

The second strike was the blueing up of the joint. Shea look much more handsome with its natural concrete instead of dark navy blue...

Third strike was outside.... it was other ballparks. That did Shea in. Had Shea had a 2-0 count like Dodger Stadium, it wouldn't have succumb.

Poor maintenance, and the $$$ being generated by new ballparks did Shea in.

Had Shea been maintained to the same level as Dodger Stadium, she'd still be standing today.

I miss her. But I also miss my '78 Buick....
I'll leave it at that...

Cheers!
-Doug

If there was one thing I didn't like about Shea was how dark it was. Night games at Shea seemed depressing for me due to how poorly lit the place was (or at least it seemed that way compared to Yankee Stadium) Not a knock on Shea, just sayin'.

One of these days, I have to dig out a snapsot I have similar to this one, taking during a day game ('member those?) from either my first or second trip ever to Shea. I believe it was 1975 (as I have TWO yearbook from that year & my sister went to one of those games with me in 1975 ... thus why I have two copies!), else it was 1978. You roto-guys will probably be able to figure that out from the out of town scoreboard which year my photo was taken.

Anyway, Seaver pitched that game & apparantly won it, as the photo I took that day also has the "TOM" flashed on the scoreboard. I honestly do not recall a single pitch from either game (the '75 one or the '78 one, for that matter), as I was too busy taking in all the sights & sounds of Shea .... my new favorite place to be!

I was never big on scoring a game either, as that always felt like 'work' to me. If I missed a pitch, or an out .... who cared, right? When you're scoring, you're frantically looking around & asking the people near you 'what happened to Staub'? 'How did Sterns wind up on third'? 'Was that a passed ball, or a wild pitch'? When I'm at a ballgame, I just want to sit back, relax & enjoy the game at my pace.

That's not a knock on those who like to score, mind you .... just my personal preference.

I noted this too and one of the posters here was helpful in explaining to me that the lighting after 2001 was replaced and upgraded. If you view many of the games prior to 2002, the field is a little darker and you get a lot more dark spots.

Here's the post where I explained it in detail. We used to design lighting systems for both interior and exterior applications so if anyone has any field lighting q's I can probably shed some . . ahem . . light on the subject:
