What was the last year when fans stormed the field after the World Series?

When did this tradition stop? I know they did it as late as '84, when the Tigers won, but I'm not sure if they stopped allowing fans ontot the field after that.

I don't think it was ever "allowed", they just use far more security these days. Yet fans need to think this: If everyone did it, they can't arrest all 50,000+.

If everyone did it, I doubt anyone would be arrested. The club would let things drop at that point, I would guess. It would look bad if they didn't, not letting their fans as a group celebrate.

Exactly. Fans need to grow some, you know. I think everyone should go through toll bridges too, but politics talk is banned here so I can't talk about that.

I'd be hard pressed to believe that in 1986 the Mets faithful didn't take the field.

I know this is a different time, and there are all sorts of weirdos and awful scenarios to worry about, but I love the old scenes of the fans storming the field/court.

You make a good point. Because of a few nuts, players could get hurt.

Of course, in the old, old games, fans were already on the field in overflow sections.

There were weirdos and awful scenarios in the '70s (if you haven't, read The Bronx is Burning for some flavor of New York in '77). That clip of Reggie Jackson having to literally push fans out of his way makes me a little uncomfortable, even though I know nothing "bad" happened.

I don't think that they did. I remember a couple of Mets pitchers taking some heat for drinking champagne on the mound after game seven.

They did storm the field when the Mets clinched the NL East in '86. After than they brought in the horsies.

the only scenario where I could plausibly see that happening in today's game would be if the Cubs won the series at Wrigley.

Every time I see that film of Chris in '76, I'm afraid he's going to die. Those clowns turned what should have been a joyous occasion into a complete nightmare.

I absolutely treasure the shoulder block and "one potato" near-punch that Fisk ladles out when bozos get too close to him at the end of Game 6.

That one always sticks out in my mind.
If I recall he bowled over one guy around second base, almost went down with that guy.

Don't know how he got from second to home, third base was mobbed.

I like the part where he knocks a guy over near the dugout. As the guy is on the ground with his legs up in the air, another guy runs into the the guy's feet and he's stopped cold.

What would have happened if the fans injured him and he couldn't touch home? Would the run count?

He didn't touch it. He came out 20 minutes later to touch it, but it wasn't there. The fans had dug it up.

But nobody has answered my question: When was the last time the fans stormed the field after a WS win?

Someone said the Mets in '86, and I seem to also remember their fans storming the field, although I'm not sure. I know for a fact it happened in '84, but I can't remember after that.

One thing that never gets talked about: After the Pirates defeated the Orioles in Baltimore to win the '79 Series, as the fans stormed the field, reserve catcher Steve Nicosia beat the living crap out of some guy, whaling on him with his catcher's mask.

I looked on the internet and could find no reference to this incident. But it happened; I have the seven-cd set of that World Series, and I rewound that part several times. There's no question about it -- Nicosia beats the crap out of this guy, whom I assume was a disgruntled Baltimore fan.

With the well-heeled fans who attend Yankee World Series games nowadays, you can be assured that will never happen again.

Kirk Gibson did the same thing after the '84 World Series: he knocked a fan out of his way with a nifty elbow shove as he headed to the dugout after the game.

A related question. When did the World Series trophy presentation go from being in the clubhouse and onto the field? They do this now in the NFL and NBA as well.
