--The Wranglers rebound continues with a sweep of the Gold Sox, which runs their winning streak to 8 and gets their lead back to 4 games in the Wild Card race. Sal Bando became the season's first 100 RBI man in the process. In the Ruth League the Iron took 2 of 3 from the Legends to move 5 up in the race for the bye.
--There was a rash of serious injuries tonight. Please review the report and take action if needed.

--Several teams have some players in immediate risk of usage violation. Remember there will be no waiving of penalties for excess usage this season. The first player on your squad to exceed 125% will cost you a 3rd round pick. If a second player goes over that becomes a 1st rounder. Please check the report and take action if needed to avoid that.

CY Young Contenders
--No shortage of good candidates this year and nobody running away with it. Tom Seaver would have my vote at this point, but its a close call over Bert Blyleven. Both have teammates who have been even beeter, but haven't worked as much - Fergie Jenkins or Jon Matlack could definately figure int he balloting. The Iron's Andy Messersmith is up there with Seaver and Blyleven in IP/ERAS, but is hurt for me by having two teammates with significantly better W-L records. The Hard Cider's Bill Lee isn't far behind this bunch and the Dust Bunnies Don Sutton has rebound from a slow start to enter the picture. He and Reggie Smith have been the engine behind the DB's surge back into contention. Two relievers are having historic seasons. Fred Beene and John Hiller deserve mention, although neither is likley to make the cut for my ballot.

And despite his sparkling ERA, Messersmith hasn't been as dominant as the other top contenders - despite pitching in a better pitcher's park than any of the other top candidates. As of Lew's last update, Messersmith's not in the top 15 in WHIP, K/BB, or OPS-Against. Those doesn't matter to everyone, I know, but I do take them into account when things are close. MVP Contenders
--This is perhaps even tougher to call than the CYA race. The most valuable hitters (based on Runs Created) have been Pete Rose and Reggie Jackson. They've neck and neck since mid-summer. Jackson pulled ahead as the Iron pulled away in their division, but Rose regained the lead as the Wranglers reclaimed command fo the WC race. Hank Aaron has actually been better than either, but has been rested quiite a bit and played mostly DH when he is in the lineup.
--Rod Carew is a bit behind them as a hitter, but would have my vote at this point based on positional adjustment. Secondbase is actually our premium position this year, with Joe Morgan and Davey Johnson also figuring to appear on alot of ballots. Wrangler's 3B Sal Bando may figure in the voting as well, with some observers considering him to be the real leader of the Wranglers, over Pete Rose. --Dust Bunnies 3B Darrell Evans might also get some votes, with his team fightign for their first ever playoff appearance. Reggie Smith has been the main catylist of their surge, but he had half a season of lousy play for the Thunder before the trade. Hard Cider C Ted Simmons, Legends CF Cesar Cedeno and Spikes outfielder Billy North also deserve a little consideration.

Runs Created
Why are RC (runs created) a better measure than RC27(runs created per 27 outs)?

RC/27 does not take playing time into consideration. Aaron is been the best hitter per game played, but has played significantly less than the guys ahead of him in RC.

So one's not better, they just tell you different things. I look at both. But for an MVP award, usually total value is what people are looking at. The guy with an OPS of .900 who plays every day is more valuable than a guy with an OPS of .950 who only played in 130 games. |

Royals Stadium Park Factors: 115/114/160/102 County Stadium Park Factors: 95/100/90/90 Stargell's going to have great OPS+, probably, but a huge portion of his walks have been intentional, and Oakland really isn't a terrible park for hitting HR's (78/69/80/93). So it's not hurting him as much as it would an average hitter. But he's still having a monster year, and has probably been the best hitter in the league this year outside of Aaron. He certainly deserves to finish in the top 10 at his current pace. Last edited by mwiggins; 11-05-2009 at 06:31 PM. |

--The Spikes weep the Gamblers, while the Iron get swept by the Shoeless Joes, to pull within 2 in the race for the Chadwick pennant. The Legends also took 2 of 3 to close the gap to 3 in the race for the bye. The Dust Bunnies pick up a game in the Robinson WC race.
--Craig, Pepe Fries is at 123%. Hope you get back with us before tomorrow's games or heis going to cost you a draft choice.

Don't know what's going on.
I suddenly stopped getting notifications of emails from BBF. I'll go in and adjust my settings and hope it starts to work again. Also sorry about not getting the web site updated before this morning. I just got the file too late to do it yesterday. I'm working on it now and it should be done in a few minutes.

--The Spikes recorded a sweep of the Joes, running their winning streak to 7, and pulling within a game of the Iron. The Legends also got a sweeo tonight and are just a game back of the Spikes in what is shaping up as a great race for the Ruth bye.
--The Knights swept the Dust Bunnies to push their lead in the Johnson back into double digits. The Hard Cider stumbled against the Cloverleafs, allowing the Knights to get back within single digits in the race for the bye. --Cy Young frontrunners Tom Seaver and Bert Blyleven each won their 17th game tonight, as did Reggie Cleveland. Hank Aaron and Davey Johnson each got their 100th RBI and are tied for the league lead at 37 HR. --Craig/Windy City Fan has been out of touch since before the All Star break. Rather than allow the Thunder to slide into usage damage I'm taking the team under league control for the remainder of the season. Hopefully Craig will be back to resume his stewardship of the team before we get to offseason activity.

I still overpaid for him, but nice to see Bonds Sr. making a difference in the push for that bye. His August production (.310/.368/.643 w/20 RBI and 8 SB's) has been crucial in making up for North's (.240/.321/.267) and McCovey's (.173/.300/.373) poor months.
Btw, for those who don't care for Tim McCarver, the Spikes stole 8 bases on him in one game back on the 22nd. That total included a pair of double steals in 6th and two "forced" errors (an errant pickoff throw and McCarver threw one into CF on a Bonds SB attempt). ![]() |

Jack, I don't think you can sign guys to multi-year deals once the season has begun. I could certainly be wrong (wouldn't be the first time nor will it be the last), but I believe anyone signed in season can only be taken for a 250K, 1 year (meaning remainder of season) deal. Mark can confirm that or correct me if I'm wrong.
