I think you’re correct in that big moves probably won’t happen this year. But I’m hoping they can at least maintain their offense by resigning Bay, though I’d only give it a 50/50 chance at this point.
If Bay signs with another team, then I’d trade Kotchman with other prospects for a left fielder, who hopefully can hit decently with some power. As I had previously mentioned I’d look into trading for Adam Dunn.
Theo’s end of season address to the media, seems to imply major changes may not happen this year. Theo said;

Many Red Sox fans are hoping a trade for Adrian Gonzalez happens, myself included. And I do think there’s a chance the Padres will trade him. Even former Padres general manager Kevin Towers said;

But then I recently heard Padres owner Jeff Moorad interview on a SD radio show. Moorad asked newly hired GM Jed Hoyer if Theo was going to try and trade for Adrian Gonzalez, Hoyer said no, he believes Theo is going in a different direction and may not have the inventory of prospects to make a trade for him. The interview can be heard in the below link;

Trading for Gonzalez would be costly, probably Buchholtz and other prospects plus that would probably mean they’d attempt to trade Lowell, which might mean eating a large portion of his contract, something I doubt Theo wants to do. So If Theo doesn’t plan on trying to trade for Adrian Gonzalez, though I’m sure he’ll at least kick the tires on a possible trade, I can see the FO keeping who we have.
It’s possible the Sox might be planning to platoon Youkilis and Lowell at third base and V-Mart and Youk at first base like last year. Maybe Lowell and Papi will platoon at DH as well. If they do, I’m hoping Theo will make a deal for a good hitting and hopefully good fielding catcher for games when V-Mart plays first base which might be two or three games a week.
With Brad Mills taking the job as manager with the Astros, leaving us with an opening for a coach, it's possible that the Sox offer Jason Varitek a coaching job. Hopefully Tek retires and takes a coaching position with the Sox this year. And if Tek does retire, because Luis Exposito is a year or two away from being ready and since Kottaras and Dusty Brown aren’t very good hitting catchers I’d make an offer for Miguel Montero of the Dbacks.
A year ago, rumor has it that The Sox were offered Montero for Bowden straight up which Theo rejected. Since then, the Dbacks other catcher, Chris Snyder hurt his back which required surgery. Montero was given more playing time and developed into a good hitter (.294/.355/.478) with decent defense and took over as the Dbacks top catcher. So it will cost more then just Bowden for the Dbacks to trade Montero, if they even consider trading him.
The Dbacks don’t have a lot of money for payroll and want to extend Brandon Webb who will be a FA after 2010, so maybe they’d consider a deal if we took on a bad contract to help them save some money, someone like Eric Byrnes who is set to make 11 million in 2010. I’d offer Kottaras, Bowden, and maybe a prospect for Montero and Byrnes.
Byrnes isn’t a good hitter, and the Dbacks are looking to trade him; (

We could use Byrnes as a fourth outfielder for one year. Byrnes, who will be 34 years old, has been injury prone but is known for his all out hustling play and good defense, he can play all OF positions and has hit for a little power, plus has good base running/stealing skills.
