    Watch for Eddie Bonine

Reading through some of the prospects guides, this guy struck me as an interesting option for an emergency starter. And possibly a spot in the rotation a few years from now?

Apparently Bonine used to be exclusively a knuckleballer, but then began working in a 90+ mph fast ball as well as a curve. He was 14-5 for Erie last season (and won the league pitcher of the year) and should be on the Mud Hens to start this year out.

Hopefully, the only time the Tigers will need a 6th starter this year will be for the odd makeup day/doubleheader. Still I would like to see a player feature a knuckleball and a 90+ fast ball. I don't think there have been too many pitchers like that in MLB history.

    Eddie update

    2-0, 3.79 ERA, 11IP, 5R, 6K, 4BB

It would be a shame to bring him up with the offense going the way it is, still I thought I would update.

This is actually quite interesting. Bill James and Rob Neyer have both repeatedly noted that there is no reason why a pitcher shouldn't throw a knuckler as a change of pace with one or two other good pitches. Eddie would seem to be one of just two pitchers in professional baseball fitting this mould (Mets Minor League catcher-turned-reliever Joe Hietpas throws a very good 90 mph 2-seam fastball along with a plus knuckler).

Would be nice to see Eddie promoted...he could work well out of the bullpen and give a different look.

According to the broadcast, he will start saturday....I have apprehension about it. I have been pimping people up for this guy since before the season started. From the folks here, to the folks next to me in my season ticket package, to the random Tigers fans I talk to I have been saying this guy might be good, but I worry about the last few starts I have looked at. So I guess we will see?

Every season I try and look for a pitcher to maybe watch for: Andrew Miller (2006) from my viewing the College WS, to wanting to see Jair Jurrjens (2007) before trading him last year, to this guy, I do hope he does well......I wanna see a knuckle baller throw another "effective" (90ish fastball in Bonine's case) major league pitch.

*Edited note: in 2004-2005 it was all about Chris Shelton

I have good news - yesterday the Tigers purchased Andrew Bonine's contract from Triple-A Toledo. And yes, he is starting today against Brad Penny (5-8, 5.38 ERA). Bonine is 9-2 with a 4.48 ERA during his time in Toledo this season.

He looked pretty good in his first start, his line was negatively effected by some balls that dropped in. I did not see him feature a regular style knuckleball even though both a prospects magazine and some web pages have claimed he had that in his arsenal. His ball did seem to have some odd movements on a couple of occasions but had much to high a velocity for a regular knuckler. That said he gave up 6ER, 2K, 0BB, on 5.1 IP for a 10.13ERA.

Okay almost a year and a half later, I think it's time for Bonine to feature more knuckleballs.

    Bone nine. Nudge. Wink.

We have the Tigers pennant* crawl and Kings in Stan's Service in Detroit in the same week to close Cobo.

They (K.I. Stan's S.) played Tiger Stadium a while back.

You keep on shouting, Jews a keep on shouting, I ... wanna rock and roll all night,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

Just a thought: How many B'nai B'rith nights were held at Tiger Stadium(seems like I went to every one of 'em) as opposed to NAACP nights?

    My memory fails.

    ...keep on shoutin'...to the pennant.*

Really, you don't admire the majesty and tradition of a central division championship pennant? Over in Cleveland they have like five of them displayed on the walls (or banners, or both).
