Former Astros pitcher Brian Powell found dead at age 35

Brian Powell, who pitched in over 200 Minor League games from 1995-2005, died Monday in Tallahassee, Fla., from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to the Post-Searchlight of Bainbridge, Ga. Powell, 35, spent 11 seasons in the Minors with Detroit, Houston, San Francisco, Philadelphia and Washington, retiring in 2005 after a season at Triple-A.

He threw a no-hitter for the Triple-A New Orleans Zephyrs -- an Astros affiliate at the time -- on May 6, 2001 against Omaha, his first of three complete games that year.

That's sad.

Don't forget that he also spent parts of six seasons pitching in the Majors. He was the 41st overall pick in the 1995 draft ahead of such notables as Carlos Beltran, Sean Casey, Ryan Dempster, Doug Mientkiewicz, Joe Nathan and A.J. Burnett.
