confirmed. Just spoke with someone I know on the coaching staff, they gassed the entire coaching staff top to bottom.

It has also been reported at mlb.com. It goes to show you that no matter how tight a GM and manager may be that once the manager has the public turn on him he is toast.

Why with 5 games left? Sounds punitive, to me. Maybe just bush...

Wedge and the coaching staff will finish out the 2009 schedule, they just announced it today for whatever reason. It is a bit of a head-scratcher.

He said he wanted to know before the trip to Boston and they accomodated. He still gets paid for next year.

One Eric down one more to go in Cleveland.

You guys think the Tribe will make a hard push for Red Sox pitching coach John Farrell? Any other speculations?

I didn't know Eric Wedge actually traded Cliff Lee and CC Sabathia and not management.

It's been almost 20 years since the Indians went outside their organization to hire a manager.

I thought I heard on Baseball Tonight recently that Farrell isn't allowed to interview for a managerial job until after 2010, that it's in his contract

Big mistake on the Indians upper managements part. I've always liked him as a field boss. Unfortunately, as I have learned painfully this season as a Mets fan that if the manager has no horses, the team goes nowhere. Wedge didn't get rid of Sabathia, Lee, Garko, Martinez. Nor did he force any injuries on any player. The bottom line is that the Indians fired the wrong guy. They should have kept Wedge, and fired Chuck Dolan and family instead. As I've always noted that just because you own, and operate a cable company, it doesn't necessarily translate into running a sports franchise. I'd love for the Mets to consider hiring Wedge as a replacement for Jerry Manuel. :homeplate:

Ummm, its Larry Dolan, not Chuck. Larry has money from stock in Cablevision and other investments and is a lawyer by trade (like his son) and the team is owned by family trusts.
I'm amazed that anyone seems surprised by this firing. It's how the game works, hell it's how business works for that matter. It's a lot easier to fire a manager(boss) than all the employees and management (owners) never get fired.
Shapiro is part of the ownership team and has at least another year. If the new manager works out, Shapiro will be around for several more years and the Dolans will keep the team as long as it isn't totally killing them financially, or they lose interest (are you listening Randy Lerner?). As long as Larry is around THEY WILL NOT BE SOLD!

that just means that the Indians need to get Boston's permission to interview Farrell, probably involving some form of compensation.

If Farrell is the guy they want, I don't think that stops them.

With Wedge out after Sunday, who else is favoured to be the replacement candidates to replace him, besides Farrell? I'm just curious here.

Farrell takes his name out of the running for consideration of the Indians job:

Other names that i have heard thrown around were Buck Showalter, Mike Hargrove, and Trey something from the indians AAA.

I would like to see them find someone with prior major league managerial experience, but we shall see.

Something not generally appreciated is how much control Shapiro exercised over managerial decisions. Unless Shapiro is willing to relinquish a certain amount of control some veteran managers like Showalter would not take the job if offered.

If you want Wedge I will help him pack and drive him to Flushing myself. 2009 is not his fault. Its all the years leading up to this that lead to his firing. His poor managing is what cost the team a playoff birth in 2005 and the world series in 2007. The team underachieved when he had the players.

This season is on Shapiro not the Dolans. $80 million should be enough to get you 87 wins (which is what it takes to win the division) when you start with 38 games against KC and Chicago.
