You can certainly make the argument that without late-season acquisitions Cliff Lee and Pedro Martinez anchoring the pitching rotation that the Phillies would be in trouble. Instead of a seven game division lead with 20 days remaining in the regular season, would the Phillies even be in first-place? If so, thanks to building an early season lead, they might barely hold off the Florida Marlins, but would likely be "One & Done" and get ousted in the first round of the playoffs.
Let's also mention the contributions of newly-acquired outfielder, Ben Francisco who in his month and a half with the team has outshone anyone who has been around all year among the Phillies bench performers.
General Manager , Ruben Amaro Jr. and Field Manager, Charlie Manuel have stuck with the veterans that won last year's World Title, probably to a fault, but it is these new acquisitions that have given the Phillies the chance to repeat as World Champs.

Let's not forget the contribution of season level "new guy" Raul Ibanez--he helped a lot in the first half of the season, and seems to have largely rebounded to expected levels.

No doubt the newcomers have helped.

It would be funny if Pedro becomes the most important acquisition. I can't believe how good he looks.
