PLEASE READ BEFORE VOTING!

Format and Rules
Voting Rules: Voters may vote for between 0-15 candidates. Votes will be made public, and voters are encouraged to post their ballots in the thread and not view results before voting. PLEASE LIMIT YOUR BALLOT TO 15 VOTES AT MOST. EXCESS VOTES MAY RESULT IN YOUR BALLOT BEING DISQUALIFIED.
-Blank Ballots: A "None of the Above" option is available if you believe no one is worthy and you wish to submit a blank ballot. This option is not to be taken lightly and it is strongly urged that it be used only after the utmost consideration, as non-votes carry great weight. Additionally, if using this option, please post your rationale.

Voting Criteria: Players are to be evaluated within the context of the era in which they played and the history of the game to that point. Players are not to be held to standards that would materialize at a time beyond the year of the current election. Modern statistical analysis is permitted but must be applied strictly within historical context not to go beyond the year of the current election. Players are to be judged based solely on their playing careers. Other, non-playing contributions may be considered to the extent that they coincided with a player's playing career (such as a player/manager).

Thoughtfulness and Editing Ballots: Please review and thoughtfully consider the candidates before voting, and make sure you have accurately filled out your ballot before submitting. Requests for editing ballots after the fact will generally not be honored. Exceptions might be made if a voter accidentally voted for the wrong player or accidentally went over the voting limit (but I strongly encourage you to do your best to prevent either from happening).

Required Support: Players receiving at least 75% support in an election will be elected. Players need at least 5% support to appear on the next ballot.

Player Eligibility: Players eligible for an election will have last played at least 5 years prior to the election year and have appeared in at least 10 Major League seasons. If a player appeared in less than 10 seasons, he may still be eligible if he had a minimum of 3000 PAs or 1500 IP, though extra scrutiny will be applied. Players will remain on the ballot for 15 years, provided they continue to receive at least 5% of the vote, at which point they will become indefinitely eligible for periodic elections conducted by the Veterans Committee.
- Age Exception: For players 40 or older, they will become eligible the later of either 5 years after their last year of continuous play, or their first inactive year at age 45 or older.
- Death Exception: For players who meet the criteria for consideration, but die before their first year of eligibility can have the five year waiting period waived and placed on the ballot the year of death.

Election Period: Elections will close exactly one week after starting. The next election might not commence for another day or two.

Conduct Policy: Every vote is a voter's opinion on who should be elected to the Hall of Fame. It is our responsibility as voters to be respectful towards each other. Personal attacks should not be tolerated and you should notify a moderator rather than allowing an argument to escalate and further derail discussion of the candidates.

Recounts: There is a moratorium on regular election recounts until the 1960 election. It is your responsibility to ensure that your ballot is correct when it is submitted. No votes will be adjusted if you accidentally clicked on the wrong box.

Election threads are going to be a bit more sporadic during the fall semester. I'm a busy grad student, so Thursday or Friday updates might be more likely at this point because those days are when I have the time to sit for the amount of time that it requires for me to post the threads.

My Ballot:
Harry Brecheen
Phil Cavarretta
Dom DiMaggio
Bob Elliot
Lefty Gomez
Tommy Henrich
Bob Johnson
Charlie Keller
Ralph Kiner
Chuck Klein
Ernie Lombardi
Hal Newhouser
Allie Reynolds
Bucky Walters
Lon Warneke

Berger, Lazzeri and Manush fell off the ballot. I picked up Dom DiMaggio, Ralph Kiner and Hal Newhouser in their places. I dropped Dixie Walker from my ballot and cast a vote for Phil Cavarretta.

Ballot:

Ewell Blackwell--The whip was an amazing pitcher who had a short career and burned out early.

Dom DiMaggio--War credit puts him over the top for me.

Bob Elliot--One of the 5 best third basemen in the 1st 100 years of professional baseball deserves a spot on my ballot.

Ferris Fain--A player with one of the highest OBPs in the history of the game (even with a short career) deserves a slot on my ballot (at least for now, pending some discussion).

Lefty Gomez--Just over the line for me.

Bob Johnson--Seems to fit our HOF standard for outfielders.

Charlie Keller--War credit edges him into my queue.

Ralph Kiner--No brainer

Hal Newhouser--No brainer

Vern Stephens--A tough case, but one close enough to at least this year make my ballot.

Henrich is now 96 years old.

One year older than Joe DiMaggio, he came to the Yankees one year later, in 1937. He played fulltime in 1938 and again beginning 1941. If I may oversimplify, DiMaggio played fulltime while incumbent George Selkirk, Henrich and Charlie Keller split time.

Henrich retired following the 1950 season, one year before DiMaggio. He played only half of the Yankees games in 1950 but he did not show DiMaggio's decline as a batter. Was he injured? If not then why he "hang up his spikes"?
(Selkirk also played his entire major league career with the Yankees. Keller did also until injury reduced him to a pinch-hit role for two seasons in Detroit, following the 1949 season.)

He missed the 1943-44-45 seasons entirely. With those three seasons, and the usual qualifications, he would have 7200+ career plate appearances rather than 5400+. How much "war credit" do you give him, if you quantify careers in those terms?

In one sense, straight-line interpolation from his 1942 and 1946 seasons yields a conservative estimate of what Henrich lost to the war. Those were his two poorest seasons as an everyday player: average OPS+ 117, compare average OPS+ 137 for 1941 and 1947, better than that for '40 and '48.

What happened to Tommy Bridges? Last election, he got over 50% of the vote. I have not seen Bridges on anyone's list, and I'm guessing it's because he is not on the ballot (but should be, right?).

Another mistaken omission on my part. :banghead::banghead::banghead:

I'm sure he won't skip a beat when he returns next year. No biggie.

OOC, on an aside, if Ralph Kiner is elected this year, unless I am overlooking someone, he will be the 1st member of this project's HOF who is still alive and active in sports in 2009!

Of players who have appeared on the master list for an election year, Lonnie Frey at 99 years old, Tommy Henrich at 96 years old, Eddie Joost at 93 years old, Phil Cavaretta at 93 years old, Buddy Lewis at 93 years old, Danny Litwhiler at 93 years old, Marty Marion at 91 years old, Bobby Doerr at 91 years old, Bob Dillinger at 90 years old are all notable baseball players who were considered or added to a ballot in this project who are still around in 2009. Monte Irvin and Bob Feller are not far off and are the other 2 90+ year olds still around in 2009.

Can't believe that Vern is not getting more support. He's a slight bit better than Sewell IMO, and since i was convinced to vote for Sewell after a while i had to vote for Stephens.

Stephens is the only SS with at least 250 career win shares and at least 24 win shares per 162, who is eligible but is not in yet. I suppose that the case against him as that three of his best six years came during the war.

It's interesting that people are willing to assume three real good years for someone like Dom DiMaggio for the three war years he missed, but when a player actually does have three good years during that time, it is held against him.

If we're gonna give reasonable war credit to boost guys up, we have to at least give Stephens considerable credit for being a great player for those three years. For him to only be getting 33% support here is outrageous.

PS - Vern played in 7 all star games.

Ballot:

Ferris Fain--A player with one of the highest OBPs in the history of the game (even with a short career) deserves a slot on my ballot (at least for now, pending some discussion).

Come on now....Fain had one great season (28 win shares), and just one other season with even 20 win shares (21). His third best season was just 19 win shares, and he's not even close to 200 career win shares. A notable player because of the walks and a very good glove, but nowhere near a hall of famer.

No Newhouser?

Idk, im on the fence with him. Clearly dominant for a 3 year span in the mid 40s but not much else (against a war weakened league in '44 and '45). I know I voted for Gomez but he's right around the same level and may omit him next time. Anyone wanna push me over the fence on Hal?

Newhouser had a significantly better ERA & ERA+ with 500 extra innings. Had Newhouser played with Gomez's Yankees, their Winning %s would be the same (perhaps Newhouser bettering Gomez).

He was great in '47 and '48 as well. And great as a swing man in 1942, though his record sucked.

He was also very good in 1949, and good in 1950.

And that fact that he was just as good in 1946 as he was in 1944 and 1945 somewhat minimized the discounts I would normally apply to those years. He was awesome in 1944 and 1945, but 1946 was probably his best season.

He should, but was Bob Elliot really one of the top five third basemen from 1869-1969? Top 10 I can see, but who's pre-1970 top 5? Does that list include Negro Leaguers?

If you're talking pre-1960, and sticking to just major leaguers, it becomes more reasonable. Even mid career, Mathews is probably #1. Then you've got Baker, Hack, Elliott, Collins, Traynor, Rosen, Groh, and maybe a few others. Elliott might be among the 5 best of that group.

I'm looking at the 1st 90 years more accurately. In the 1st 100, Eddie Mathews tops this list by a wide margin. Hewever at the time Bob Elliott retired in 1953 and even at the time when he 1st came eligible in 1958, there were only 4 third basemen in the history of the Major Leagues plus 2 from the Negro Leagues that had a better case for our hall, plus 2 third basemen as well as possibly a 3rd who we have elected who did not have a career that was on par with Elliott's career:

1. Frank Baker
2. Stan Hack
3. Heinie Groh
4. Jimmy Collins
5. Bob Elliott
6. Pie Traynor
7. Tommy Leach
8. Ezra Sutton

One could probably argue that both Jud Wilson and John Beckwith are clearly ahead of Bob Elliott. It would be a really tough sell and a big stretch to put Tommy Leach or Ezra Sutton ahead of Bob Elliott and Pie Traynor was better defensively, but Elliott was better offensively. Elliott and Collins are also pretty close to each other career wise.

It's an interesting thing about 3B - the bulk of the best talent really came after 1950, starting with Eddie Mathews. Part of it may just be coincidence, part of it may be that expectations at 3B were different, especially early in the 20th Century, but whatever the reason, our knowledge of the players that will emerge at the position post-1950 likely biases our assessment of earlier 3Bman to some degree. Does Elliot measure up to Schmidt, Mathews, Brett, Boggs, Santo, and Jones? No. For that matter, does he measure up to the likes of Evans, Nettles, Boyer, Bando, Bell, Cey, Ventura, etc? Perhaps not in some cases. But that's not the question at this time. Rather, does he measure up biased on what we've seen as the very best of the position as of 1960? I believe so, and that's what makes this project a little different and interesting, IMO.

I'm thinking hard about a couple of others for next time- still undecided on Newhouser, and perhaps Stephens, a really intriguing guy.

Next year, we see 2 more slam dunks in Jackie Robinson and Bob Feller. We also have a newcomer who will likely draw significant support and discussion in Phil Rizzuto and a forth who may draw a few supporters in Dale Mitchell.

I voted for...

Brecheen
DiMaggio
Elliott
Gomez
Johnson
Keller
Kiner
Klein
Leonard
Lombardi
Myer
Newhouser
Stephens
Walters
Warneke

Perhaps against my better judgment in Brecheen's and Stephens' case.

I do feel that Gordon, Henrich, Joost, Lopat, Newsom, Pesky, Reynolds, Travis, Trosky and D. Walker merit some discussion also.

Exiled Bridges supporter who, after reviewing his stats, thinks he should be inducted ASAP. Barring cheating, I think a pitcher who Top 10's in ERA 10 times (and same in ERA+) should be an easy choice for the Hall of Fame. Voters who vote otherwise, I think, either have their pitching standards up too high or aren't properly putting the pitcher into the context of when he pitched.

I'm a little surprised to see Sid Gordon not even get one vote. He was a good player, similar to Tommy Henrich, but was buried on mostly terrible teams. He's obviously not a Hall of Famer, but he seems to already be undeservedly forgotten.

Sid Gordon is similar to Tommy Henrich by raw career batting records but he doesn't merit the same attention here because he missed only two seasons to the war, not three, and he didn't do much before that to support viewing those as prime seasons. Gordon had 500+ PA at OPS+ 100, almost all during 1943; Henrich 2700+ PA at OPS+ 127.

I'm sure that Gordon is forgotten partly because he was a member of the New York Giants before (1943, 46-49) and after (1955) they won two pennants and contested four pennants in five years. And he was a member of the Boston Braves (1950-52) after they won one their only late pennant. Gordon did not play on mostly terrible teams. At worst, four terrible seasons, but that measure focuses on single seasons; the late 40s Giants and early 50s Braves may also be considered mediocre teams with isolated bad years. He played one season on a truly good team (Milwaukee) and one on a truly bad team (Pittsburgh).

Gordon was a pretty lackluster 3B before the War. I'm not sure how long he would have remained as such if had continued playing. As it turned out, Gordon didn't really get going in any manner until he was in his 30s. That can't help. Henrich was caught up in the War during his prime, which was when he was 20-something.

Just above I gave mid-career batting records for Gordon and Henrich before their WWII service.
> Gordon had 500+ PA at OPS+ 100, almost all during 1943; Henrich 2700+ PA at OPS+ 127.

Henrich's prewar record does support and Gordon's does not support viewing the lost seasons as prime seasons. As dgarza suggests, there is lack of support also in Gordon's record immediately following the war. In two full seasons 1946-47 he had 1000+ PA at OPS+ 111.

In sum that is 1597 PA at OPS+ 107 for Gordon before 1948, equivalently "until his 30s" in dgarza's words.

Then in his early thirties 1948-52 Gordon put up five years batting as good as Henrich's best three-year run.
: 3002 pa at ops+ 146 : Gordon 1948-52, ages 30-34
: 1804 pa at ops+ 146 : Henrich 1947-49, ages 34-36

It appears that Gordon was a "late bloomer".

I agree, but if Player A is receiving enough support to sustain on the ballot for several years, and Player B is similar to Player A, then it can be curious when Player B receives no support.

Also, to some of the other comments about Gordon/Henrich, I should have clarified that I don't think Gordon is as good a candidate as Henrich, but I don't think he's that far off and was probably a better player than he gets credit for.
