I wish the best for him and those that care about him. In my mind I will never forget him.

A great man who has done nothing but contribute brightly to the Tigers and Detroit for years. Even when he was stupidly let go for a year, he exuded nothing but class.

When it really comes down to it, Ernie Harwell is and always will be my favorite Tiger. The sound of his voice is as much a part of my formative years as any family member.
If the Tigers could name a couple streets that bordered Tiger Stadium after Kaline and Cochrane, maybe they could see fit to petition the city to re-name the section of Witherell that runs by Comerica in Ernie's honor. Better yet, the whole ballpark. Comerica Park at Harwell Plaza.
Within the span of a year, most likely, Ernie Harwell, George Kell and Tiger Stadium will no longer be with us. Talk about a gut punch.

Even in his last days, he remains bright and classy. Sounds like he is enjoying his ice cream.
My thoughts go out to Mr. Harwell, his family, and his legions of fans.

This is extremely sad news to witness. I always liked Ernie Harwell, and it's sad that he likely will no longer be with us. I hope for the best for him and his family.

Ernie's voice has accompanied me from the age of 6, when he first began Tiger broadcasts. If there is a heaven, and if I get to go, I expect that Ernie will be calling out: "Newhouser sets and pitches to Gehrig - STRIKE THREE CALLED! He stood there like the house by the side of the road, and watched that one go by."

Hopefully Detroit can send him on one last World Series ride this fall.

The city and the OTSC need to meet this week about keeping a portion of whats left of Tiger Stadium for a mueseum for Ernie Harwell. the concourse from the gate on Cochrane and Michigan to were the visitors clubhouse is still there and could be reused for a memorial.
this needs to happin ASAP before anymore demolition happins to whats left of the ballpark.

I would love to have guys like Ernie Harwell and Vin Scully do some books-on-CDs before they past.
Best wishes, Mr. Harwell.

I think Ernie Harwell has put together an "audio scrapbook" that is being sold. Scully just isn't into that sort of thing, which is not meant as a criticism of either of them.
Living in Las Vegas, I didn't get to hear Mr. Harwell much. He did several playoffs for CBS Radio and then the game of the week on CBS Radio now and then. But I had heard he was great, and those broadcasts confirmed it. I have read his books and read about him, and he makes me think of Red Smith's line about Elston Howard: no one had to define class for him because he saw it every morning in the mirror when he shaved. Class. Ernie Harwell. They go together.

I remember always listening to Ernie on the radio with my dad. Sometimes we'd go sit in the car in the driveway just to be able to listen to the game without all the usual distractions. I lost my dad to inoperable brain cancer this March, and now to have Ernie on his way out REALLY saddens me. I'm happy Mr. Harwell is able to go bravely into his future with a smile and class, as usual. He'll be sorely missed by me and countless others.

By the way, I may have missed it on another thread, but I hope Tigers fans get to see or were able to see Bob Costas interview Ernie Harwell on the MLB Network. A few highlights popped up on mlb.com. Nothing really NEW in it, but Costas even said he was the healthiest looking sick man he'd ever seen. And it ended with Mr. Harwell, FROM MEMORY, reciting, "The Game for All America."

As a New York Giants fan, I am so very proud that Ernie was once an announcer for my boyhood team. Hang in there, SIR...

Ernie did put out a CD set entitled "Ernie Harwells Audio Scrapbook" a couple of years ago. I received an autographed one from my son for my birthday. Try "www.eharwell.com and see if is still available.
