How in the world could we let somebody like Scott Kazmir pass right under our noses? He was just traded to the LA/Anaheim Angels for three minor-leaguers. Sure, he hasn't been at his top form this season, but he was certainly rounding into it with a 4-1 record over his last six, including 10 K's against Toronto the other night. He's a left-handed fireballer who is under contract for the next two years for $20 million, along with an option for a third year, and oh yeah....he's only 25!! What do we need? A strong lefty to stick between Verlander and Jackson. If the Angels got him, then we obviously passed on the waiver wire, so this was maybe a case of DD asleep at the wheel or Mr. Illitch not ok'ing a larger payroll. Either way, it makes the strong stronger and gives us that much less of a chance at a title this season.

Assuming you guys did put in a waiver claim, evidently the low level prospects you offered to the Rays were worse than the crappy low-level prospects the Angels offered.
As a Red Sos fan, I'm happy. The rays just eliminated themselves from the post-season with that move.
Look at the bright side. He didn't go to the Chisox, right?

Kazmir is one of those rare *young* talents with a proven track record. Whatever the Rays wanted for him, you give them. Heck, give them a little extra for completely FLEECING them in the Matt Joyce/Edwin Jackson deal, either way we still got two All-Star starting pitchers who are very young for a handful of unproven minor-leaguers. Maybe Kazmir's injury history scared the Tigers' front-office off, but I can't see that being the case since they took Jackson from them and he's had Tommy John surgery. A little peeved at this non-move, sorry for the rant. Kazmir was just what the doctor ordered, not just this year but the future, and we sent the doctor a "Thanks, but no thanks" card and told him to go to a strong rival instead.

Didn't just last season we trade for a STUD lefty who throws hard, and had a little bit of an injury issue? What was his name? Dontrelle something?
Not to say they are going to rebound/respond the same way, but....
2006 D. Willis
W/L 10-15, 5.17ERA*, 87BB*, 1.597WHIP*, K/9 6.4**
2009 S. Kazmir
W/L 8-7, 5.92ERA*, 50BB, 1.541WHIP (2nd highest WHIP in career), K/9 7.4**
*up till that season career highs
**Career lows, or tied for career low.

As a Red sox fan I would have preferred if Kazmir had been acquired by the Tigers.
If the Tigers had him, he faces the Yankees.
If the Angels get him I'd lay good odds he returns to hos old Sox killing ways. Which for a franchise who has NEVER BEATEN THE SOX IN A SEASON SERIES is, I imagine, part of the charm of Kazmir for Anaheim.

point taken, but slightly off...IMO
Willis was a throw-in salary dump while Kazmir was not.

Willis was signed to a lucrative extension without ever having thrown a pitch for the Tigers, and that was a bad move. But what makes you think that the trade of Kazmir was not a salary dump? That's exactly what it was.
We have 27 million dollars worth of left-handed starting pitching at this moment. They've combined for 3 wins.
The most overvalued commodity in baseball is left-handed pitching.
Maybe Aubrey Huff can pitch, because Jarrod Washburn can't.
Scott Kazmir? On this team? I suppose he could pinch run.

Thats a cheaper cost per win than the Lions of both 2008 and 2009 COMBINED. Although the Lions are 6-1 in their last 7 preseason games.
I wonder if the Tigers can sign Kenny Rogers to a month and a half long contract?

Kenny Rogers could probably out pitch Washburn at this point. His ERA has jumped up nearly a full run since joining the Tigers. He seems dead set on pitching himself out of a lot of money on his upcoming free agent contract, but he'll still probably end up next year with some border line team that's willing to overpay for a genuine left-handed starter. Milwaukee, Texas, Cubs, Rockies, Giants, etc.
I wonder if Nate Robertson is going to get another start, or if Armando Galarraga will be getting his cheese slapped around the yard again. I can see him muttering to himself on the mound when he gets into the 3-1 count that he gives every hitter
"Senores, mi queso...smack como si fuera un nino travieso."
(Gentlemen, my cheese...smack it as you would an errant child.)
The Lions are 6-1? Is Billy Sims still around?

He's probably signing at Gibraltar this weekend.
If the Tigers had somehow been able to aquire Kazmir, who would have been released? Bonderman's ready to rejoin the team. Keep your fingers crossed, there.

I'm still bummed at this non-trade. Blehh....
Kazmir and Willis are way different cases IMO. Willis was having issues before he came to Motown, while Kazmir has been pretty solid his whole career except for the first half of this season. He seems to have worked out those kinks, and is back to his usual lights-out self. I hope we don't have to face him in the playoffs at all (if we make it), he's the type of guy we just can't hit. Although there seems to be more of those types this year against us than ever.

Very nice... I speculate Galarraga suggests this
"Caballero, mi tortazo del queso… él pues usted si usted era Ike y él Tina."
(Gentleman, my cheese...smack it as you would if you were Ike and it Tina.)
This is fun, and Yahoo Babel Fish makes it easy.... (not endorsing that particular translator in any way...it was just the one I used).

The Tigers already traded 3 quality prospects this season, and 4 of their best prospects last season. This Tigers team doesnt need any more pitching.

The Tigers are/were not adding expensive SPs with multiple years remaining on their contracts. We are about to enter a rare off-season where no FA pitchers may be sought/signed this winter. Our farm system is loaded with 7-10 prospect pitchers that are a year or less away from contributing at this level.
We may see another off-season where we unload a couple of these arms for lineup help elsewhere on the field.
Secondly, the Tigers are about maxed-out in team payroll. Most analysts seem to think the money number has a better chance of going down - versus going up by April 2010.

In all reality, baseball has no salary cap, and owner Mike Illitch has said that he'll spend whatever it takes to win a title before his own tenure ends. That said, I'm sure he's told DD to be as responsible as possible with it, especially after the Nasty Nate and Dontrelle extensions, but Kazmir would have been a quality addition.
