This is an article from ESPN about the heyday of baseball card collecting and some commentary from the 1989 Upper Deck Ken Griffey, Jr. card itself.

"Toronto center fielder Vernon Wells' father, Vernon Sr., is an artist who painted the team checklists on the first sets of Upper Deck cards. Thanks to that connection, Vernon says he had access to a ready supply of free Upper Deck cards. He says he had at least 20 of me."

That's awesome, I never knew they were father/son.

I remember those times. Everyone thought they were going to get rich buying 100 card lots of Joe Blow rookie! I still have my 100 count of Ron Gant 1988 Fleer RC's. :laugh After a short time it dawned on me that the only people making money were the card manufacturers and the card wholesalers.

The good 'ol days. I knew baseball cards weren't going to be worth jack when I tried to pay for a coke with a Canseco rookie card- and that was in 1989.

I used to think it would be cool to have something like an ATM machine where you deposit your baseball cards and received the current highest book value back in cash. :laugh
