I'll work on some statistical data for the mistakes players, although it will probably take me a few days. I'll also see if I can get PCA data from Matt. But you can expect to see quite a few charts coming up.

Even though I didn't vote in every round, I want to thank you for your perseverance in making this list. Its not easy to stick with a project this drawn out. And yes, this is a pretty accurate portrayal of who shouldn't be in the HOF in my opinion. I might have added a few more names like Roger Bresnahan, but the people have spoken and its an accurate representation of the Hall's most unsavory choices.:applaud:

No one in this "Hall of Mistakes" is in the Hall of Merit. Through 2009, now in real time, the HOM has passed on 19 more Hall of Fame players. (* Three of them were named mistakes at BBF a few years ago.) The total 37 + 19 = 56 among 231 players in Cooperstown --not 38 and 57 because "mistake" Candy Cummings is in the pioneer category.

Here at Baseball-Fever,

The BBF Hall of Fame has elected "mistakes" Bruce Sutter and Hack Wilson. Through 2009, now in real time, it has passed on several other HOF players
: Jake Beckley, Andy Cooper, Leon Day, Lefty Gomez, Addie Joss, Sam Rice. (Beckley is in the Hall of Merit and the others are listed above.)

The Progressive HOF has elected "mistake" Mickey Welch. Through 1956 its veterans committee has considered but not yet elected two other HOF players
: Burleigh Grimes and Lefty Gomez. (Both are listed above.)

Among HOF players who are in the Hall of Merit too (175), Jake Beckley is not in the BBF HOF and Rollie Fingers was named a mistake a few years ago. The Progressive HOF through 1956 does not yet seem likely to pass on anyone. --nor does the Best of Baseball through 1952, but its backlog is still too big for any clear indications.

(bump) This theme is current in the Purgatory thread, listing candidates for hypothetical relegation from the Hall of Fame to the Foyer or h.o.v.g.

This supplement may be interesting. These are the trailing Hall of Merit members according to twelve 2008 special elections that ranked pitchers within four chronological groups and ranked non-pitchers within primary fielding positions. (I have inserted 2009 inductees John McGraw and Reggie Smith as the leading trailers at 3b and CF.)

The Bottom in the Hall of Merit
pos count: lowest ranking
P1 _6: PUD GALVIN ; Bob Caruthers
P2 18: EPPA RIXEY, Clark Griffith, RED FABER; JOSE MENDEZ
P3 19: Billy Pierce, BOB LEMON, EARLY WYNN ; Wes Ferrell
P4 20: ROLLIE FINGERS, Dave Stieb, RICH GOSSAGE ; Brett Saberhagen, DON SUTTON

C: 20: BIZ MACKEY, Quincy Trouppe, ROGER BRESNAHAN
3b 19: John McGraw, Ken Boyer, Graig Nettles
ss 25: JOE SEWELL, Dick Lundy, Dobie Moore
2b 21: NELLIE FOX, Willie Randolph, Cupid Childs ; FRANK GRANT, BOBBY DOERR

1b 19: JAKE BECKLEY, BILL TERRY, GEORGE SISLER ; Keith Hernandez
rf: 20: SAM THOMPSON, Dwight Evans, WILLIE KEELER ; DAVE WINFIELD
cf: 27: Reggie Smith, Andre Dawson, Pete Browning ; WILLARD BROWN, Lip Pike, EDD ROUSH, COOL PAPA BELL, Alejandro Oms, EARL AVERILL, Jimmy Wynn
lf: 22: RALPH KINER, Harry Stovey, JOE MEDWICK ; Charley Jones

UPPERCASE identifies Hall of Fame players (25). They may be considered Hall of Merit nominees for hypothetical relegation to Cooperstown's foyer, beyond the 57 hall of fame players who are not in the HOM (listed in #1 and #4).

Full size (34) identifies the bottom three in each group, except only one from the small group of early pitchers.

That much is "just the facts". All bottom threes are not equal so I have used my judgment of HOM opinion to give more information in two ways.

Small size (17) identifies the other poor showings in each group, in my judgment of the special elections. I have tried to list everyone below some notable gap in the election scores on a point system, and to err on the side of inclusion given more than one notable gap near the bottom.

Blue color (13) identifies the strongest candidates for bottom across groups, in my judgment based on close attention to almost all of the HOM discussions and elections. Thereby I have fingered five HOF players as the strongest candidates for relegation, according to HOM opinion: Bob Lemon, Rollie Fingers, Nellie Fox, Sam Thompson, Willard Brown.

If I count correctly there are 51 "Meritorious" players listed here, including 25 who are "Famous" too. If you prefer 50 and 25 drop Caruthers, Hernandez, or Wynn.
