View Full Version : Shared Franchise?

What do you all think about the possibility of the Dodgers returning to the New York area, as a "shared franchise"?
It doesn't seem like they're selling out all of their home games in Los Angeles. Maybe they would entertain the notion of playing some of their "home" games in New York. The hope would be that they would eventually make the full move back "home"; and finally set up camp in Brooklyn again (in time).
There used to be an NBA team called the Kansas City/Omaha Kings. The two cities "shared" the one team. Maybe we could see a Brooklyn/Los Angeles Dodger franchise, that would in the end prove to be more profitable in Brooklyn, than on the west coast.
It may not get us all we want right away; but it may be at least a good start in the right direction.

the franchise is clearly in trouble in Los Angeles. As you pointed out, attendance is a problem. maybe building a new stadium in Brooklyn for 40 games will be good.

The Indians considered doing this in the early 70s and were in negotiations with New Orleans to play about a third of their schedule there. The negotiations stopped when Nick Mileti purchased the team. Another person who was trying to buy the Indians at that time was George Steinbrenner.

I take it that the first post was totally tongue in cheek. Considering that for most of the last 10 years LA attendance has been 1 million above the NL average. Walter O'Malley put in place many rears ago mechanisms that would prevent there ever being another MLB team in Brooklyn. And the Yankees and Mets would make sure that there is never another team in the New York City area.

When the Dodgers and Giants left, there was never any intention of the National Leagued ever coming back to New York When Branch Rickey and the Continental League came into being, which incidentally was exactly 50 years ago today, O'Malley was insistant that the best place for the new team was Queens. Which incidentally he turned down as the bew home of the Dodgers, Also around the same time was a rule that no city could have more then 2 teams. Had O'Malley still been alive I don't think the Cyclones would be playing in Brooklyn. O'Malley was dead set against there ever being another team in Brooklyn.

Not if they played in identical-sized stadiums they wouldn't. You're saying that if the Brooklyn Dodgers played in a 56,000 seat stadium they would sell out every game? Naa, no way, no how, only in your dreams.
The Dodgers are just a hair shy of pushing the Yankees out of 1st place for MLB attendance. "Sell outs" mean virtually nothing. Attendance is what counts and 3.5 million is golden no matter how you try to slice it.

Still, wouldn't it be cool?! The Dodgers--even today--still claim to have a "Brooklyn" connection. How 'bout at least *one* game a year in NY--before all the old Brooklyn fans are long-gone? They could wear the old jerseys and caps, do a lot of the old Brooklyn traditions, bring back all the still-living Brooklyn players; and have a good time with it.

The most recent example of a shared franchise was the Montreal Expos, playing in Puerto Rico and Montreal. That wasn't exactly a rousing success. As VIB said the expenses and logistics, would not allow that to happen. In all seriousness if a team were ever to come to Brooklyn ever again, it won't be the Dodgers.

OK. I know I'm in "retreat mode," going from 40 games, to 4 (see below). How 'bout this idea?:
The Mets schedule a four-game home stand with the Dodgers. The city of New York informally changes the area around Citi Park to "Brooklyn," and makes Citi Field "Ebbets Field" for a few days. The Dodgers adopt the 1958 Dodger "names" for four games. The ballpark gets dolled-up to look as much like Ebbets as possible. The scoreboard would show the game as being between the New York Mets and the Brooklyn Dodgers.
You guys out there could have a great time with this. The Mets owners, whoever they are, could charge extra money for the four games, to make up for expenses, etc. The Dodgers could show some good will. You guys could even change the streets in front of Citi (now Ebbets), to "Flatbush," (or whatever the street was), etc.
Hey, I'm a guy born in Iowa, who lives in Peoria, IL. My claim to fame, in this forum, is that I was born on Oct. 4, 1955, (as you can see from my user name).

All great ideas. Except for the fact that the Los Angeles Dodgers seem to prefer getting away from their past.
If so, so be it. Once they moved to Los Angeles, they have ceased to exist in my mind, anyway.

That's a good point; but this would be a way for them to "re-connect" with their true past.
The Mets could officially be the "home" team, though they should wear their road (older style) uniforms, which would resemble the old New York Giants.
The games would be "official"; but, for fun at least, everything--as much as possible--would be done in the Ebbets fashion.

Also, the brains in MLB could care less. They'd only be responsive if attendance was way down all over the major leagues, and baseball was in danger of dying as a national sport. If that happened, then maybe we'd see something.

It will take a new owner, a "sole owner", a maverick if you will....with vision and a willingness to "build a bridge" back to brooklyn...the Idea has to start there...he or she or they would need to reach out....any such serious gesture would broaden the Dodger fanbase and quite possibly dare I say it begin to heal old wounds. Just the press PR value alone of a dodger owner saying hey we'd like to play 20 30 road games a year as "the Brooklyn dodgers" would steal the front pages...fans in la, might start staying for the whole game.....more people coming out etc...In new york, yup...even schedule some dodgers yanks games now that you got interleague play...but it must start with the dodgers.....battlin bake, the dodger dynamo

The Cyclones are a Mets farm team. The Mets would have to allow it for one thing. The other thing is most people including myself could care less about the LA Dodgers. The name Dodgers, belongs in Brooklyn, not the players, playing in LA. You can't bring back, Gil, Jackie, Pee Wee, Campy or Duke, they were the Brooklyn Dodgers. I would embrace a new MLB team in Brooklyn, but that just isn't going to happen.

It seems to me that in order to have the Brooklyn Dodgers again, one of these things must happen--as wild as all of them appear to be . . .
1) The LA franchise "repents," and brings the whole kit and kaboodle back to Brooklyn, arriving as "Prodigal Sons."
2) MLB establishes an entirely new franchise, named the Brooklyn Dodgers. (Maybe they could--like the Cleveland Browns in the NFL--get the "rights" to all the old players and stats back, etc.)
Or, 3) There is some kind of a "shared franchise," which I proffered earlier, (but which seems to be considered totally impossible).
Can anyone think of any other alternatives?

The LA franchise will never "repent". Despite the fact that LA officials helped steal the Brooklyn team, they consider the Dodgers "their own", and wish to forget their Brooklyn past.
The shared franchise idea would only appeal to MLB brass if there was a need to boost really poor attendance. Very unlikely in either NY or LA.
I would love to see major league baseball back in my neighboring borough -- but-- how will this ever happen beyond wishful thinking?

I suppose there is one more option, but it is even more far-fetched . . .
The Mets could give up their franchise, and became the Brooklyn Dodgers. All the Mets' players and stats, from 1962-on, could become the "property" of the now-named "Brooklyn Dodgers."
Would Mets' fans take kindly to this?

The Brooklyn Dodgers are no longer a franchise. If there were to ba another MLB team in Brooklyn, it would be a new franchise. In no way shape or form should the Mets be morphed into a new Brooklyn team. Young Mets fans have to realize that Fred Wilpon was a Brooklyn Dodger fan and in a small way is paying tribute to them. CitiField is not Ebbets Field. If Ebbets Field had been renovated, like Yankee Stadium was, it might have had the same name but it would have been a different field.

Someone came into my father's office that morning and gave him 4 free tickets. My dad called my mother, and a few hours later my family was off to Roosevelt Stadium! It was my first baseball game. We sat down the right field line, about 10 rows behind the Dodger bull pen. When Labine warmed up in the 8th inning, my brother ran down to the fence, leaned over, and swiped Clem's warm up towel. My mom was not happy. When the game went into the bottom of the ninth tied, she expressed concern about how long we might be there, and then---POW---the Duke launches one over the right center field wall and the Dodgers win, 2-1! I can still see the ball clearing the wall. It was great!! As I told Jnakamura, it seemed most everyone was cheering for the Dodgers at Roosevelt Stadium.
We left the park and walked the street with many Cincinnat Red Legs, still in uniform, headed to their bus across the street. I still have the ticket stub and Dodger World Championship pennant I bought that night. It turned out to be my only Brooklyn Dodger game, although I probably watched a couple of hundred on TV.
So as I said, I could live with New Jersey Dodgers, as they have a history playing there.

When the game went into the bottom of the ninth tied, she expressed concern on how long we would be there, and then---POW---the Duke launches one over the right center field wall and the Dodgers win, 2-1! I can still see the ball clearing the wall. It was great!! As I told Jnakamura, it seemed most everyone was cheering for the Dodgers at Roosevelt Stadium.
We left the park and walked the street with many Cincinnat Red Legs, still in uniform, who were headed to their team bus across the street. I still have the ticket stub and Dodger World Championship pennant I bought that night. It turned out to be my only Brooklyn Dodger game, although I probably watched a couple of hundred on TV.
So as I said, I could live with New Jersey Dodgers, as they have a history playing there.
It certainly is a much better name than Los Angeles Dodgers, don't you think?
The Dodgers will never move anywhere in our lifetime. BUT, if they did move to New Jersey, they would most certainly (re-)become the Brooklyn Dodgers.

I love this picture because this is just about the same viewpoint we had of the game that night, although we sat a little closer
Also, it's the same pennant I bought at the game (and still have).

You can tell from that photo that it was 1956 (World Champion pennant from the previous season), and it must have been chilly (the way the fans are dressed). Cool pic.

The wall in front of the fan wearing the white cap was the Dodgers' bullpen.

Funny you mention that. I remember my mother asking how the opposing player at first base (Big Klu) could wear no sleeves at all, as it was so chilly.
Hmmmm, could this picture be from the game played on 7/25//56?

You know, I was gonna guess April. It appears rather cold for the latter part of July.

The shared franchise will happen the same day Milwaukee gives Seattle the Pilots back. :)

Ah, yes, but how close it close enough? Here's an idea--how about switching franchises with Pittsburgh? The Pittsburgh Dodgers--that's only what, a 5-6 hour drive?
And in the view of many here, the Los Angeles Pirates would be entirely appropriate.

Roosevelt Stadium/Dodger trivia:
*Carl Furillo hit the 1st Dodger HR there.
*Frank Robinson hit the very first HR there.
*Both Furillo and Robinson's HR's were hit at the July 25,1956 game (Snider's was the 3rd)
*The Pirates never made it to JC in 1957. The Phillies played there twice that summer.
*The Dodgers played the Cleveland Indians (1956 exhibition) there and Sal Maglie pitched for the Indians (Bob Feller too).

Bwahahaha - Funny man you are. :laugh
Actually, Pittsburgh would get the Dodgers, the Pirates would move to Tampa (They'd have the Buccaneers and Pirates), L.A. would get the Rays (More sunshine in L.A. then in Tampa) and the Yankees would move here to Portland, Oregon, just for the hell of it.
Since NY would be left with one team, the Mets would change their name to the Modgerankees.

Los Angeles Pirates! That is a good one. It made me laugh.
If a Brooklyn Dodger franchise is desirable, it would have to be a "new" one; but it would be cool if they could--just like the Cleveland Browns did--win back all the "rights" to the "old" team.

OK, that's true. But they did have to go to court over it. The Baltimore Ravens became, essentially, an "expansion" team.
I can imagine that you guys in NY would love to see that happen to the "LA Dodgers"!

No need for that. Your fantasy humor wasn't appreciated by some. The response may have been a tad coarse, and that shouldn't be tolerated.

Too bad the precedent wasn't set in 1958. That way the Mets would be the Dodgers, the Brewers would be the Braves, the Ravens would be the Colts, and the Nationals would be the Senators. Oh, wait, never mind on that one.

That's a good point on Washington. Both the Twins *and* the Rangers have "gotten out of [that] Dodge." I suppose the Expos could re-appear; but this would be a nightmarish spectacle.

Let us conjecture for a moment, and say Stu Sternberg decides to move the Tampa Bay Rays. Stu is a New York guy, and decides to move the team to the Metropolitan area. The Yankees and Mets won't allow him into NYC, so he goes to New Jersey. What would or should the new team be called? New York ........ or New Jersey........ The Yankees and Mets would fuss and fume about him moving to New Jersey, I wonder if they could stop that move?

Your point is well-taken. I suppose the only true Brooklyn Dodger franchise is forever enshrined in the fans that remain faithful to them--even to this very day.
Maybe we should try to live by the "Harry Caray" rule: the players don't matter, the owners don't matter; all that matters are the fans.

In the Browns case the court ruled the team couldn't break its lease on the stadium, the city agreed to let them go in exchange for leaving the name and colors. At the time many in Cleveland assumed that the new Browns would be better then the old one. Unforetunately, it wound up blowing up in our faces.

The Browns (and Cleveland) are the only NFL team (and city) that has never either played in, or hosted a Super Bowl.
As I considered the Brooklyn Dodgers franchise "getting back its identity" as it were, I thought of the Browns' situation (viz. a viz. Baltimore [and the Ravens]). The court also gave them *all* their old history, etc.
Here is info. from Wikipedia, (assuming it's accurate!):
"The Baltimore Ravens came into existence in 1996 when Art Modell, then owner of the Cleveland Browns, announced his intention to relocate his team from Cleveland to Baltimore. The controversy ended when representatives of Cleveland and the NFL reached a settlement on February 8, 1996. The agreement stipulated that the Browns' name, colors, uniform design and franchise records would remain in Cleveland. The franchise history included Browns club records and connections with Pro Football Hall of Fame players. A new team to begin play in 1999 would be regarded as the 'reactivated' Cleveland Browns. Modell's Baltimore team, while retaining all current player contracts, would officially be the expansion team, a 'new franchise.' "

That's not accurate. The Ravens were never "officially" declared an expansion team. If you follow the source link and read the actual article you'll see it doesn't say that anywhere.

The Ravens are a relocated franchise. The new Browns are an expansion team. I don't know anyonwe in Cleveland who thinks the Browns of Tim Couch are linked in any way to the Browns of Jim Brown and Bernie Kosar.
