Wit and Wisdom of Rickey Henderson
-San Francisco Chronicle Staff Report, Friday, 24 July 24 2009

Rickey Henderson's place in baseball's "Bartlett's" is nearly as unassailable as his spot in its record books. Here's a sampling of Rickey being Rickey:

His game
"I think when the other team sees Rickey on base, I'm already upsetting them."
"Billy (Martin) was the publisher of Billy Ball, and I was the author."
"The more closer to the ground (you are), the less pounding you take," on his head-first slide.

His ego
"Lou Brock was a great base stealer, but today, I am the greatest of all-time," from on-field ceremony moments after breaking Brock's career stolen-base record.
"I'm a walking record."
"Muhammad Ali was my idol, and ... he said, 'I'm the greatest.' So I said, if I ever break the record, I want to say 'I'm the greatest' out of respect for Muhammad Ali. It had nothing to do with baseball."
In 1985, after being traded to the Yankees, Henderson was asked what it would be like to play on the same field as Joe DiMaggio and Mickey Mantle. "I don't care about them. ... It's Rickey time."

City mouse, country mouse
During his '80s stint with the Yankees, Henderson boasted he could see the "Entire State Building" from his condominium.
"Rickey don't like it when Rickey can't find Rickey's limo."
"Rickey got a big ranch. Rickey got a big bull. Rickey got horses. Rickey got chickens and everything. And Rickey got a 20-gallon hat."

Money man
When Henderson hadn't cashed a signing bonus check from the Yankees, front-office functionary Brian Cashman asked why. "I'm just waiting for the money market rates to go up," Rickey explained.
"All I'm asking for is what I want."
"If they're going to pay me like (Mike) Gallego, I'm going to play like Gallego," on negotiating with the A's in the early '90s.

The later years
"Kevin, this is Rickey, calling on behalf of Rickey. Rickey wants to play baseball," voice mail Henderson left for Padres GM Kevin Towers.
Another Towers favorite: In 1996, Henderson climbed aboard the Padres' team bus and headed toward the back. "You have tenure, sit wherever you want," someone said. Rickey set him straight: "Ten years? Rickey's been playing at least 16, 17 years."
Alex Rodriguez says that when they were on the Mariners in 2000, Henderson would return to the dugout after being called out and A-Rod would ask, "Rickey, was that a strike?" and Rickey would say, "Maybe, but not to Rickey."
After a Seattle strikeout, the next batter heard him say as he returned to the dugout, "Don't worry, Rickey, you're still the best."
"Do I talk to myself? No, I just remind myself of what I'm trying to do. You know, I never answer myself so how can I be talking to myself?"

Steroids
"They kept that s- a secret from me. I wish they had told me. My God, could you imagine Rickey on 'roids? Oh, baby, look out!"

Bedtime stories
"Do your stretching before you sleep. That way you wake up loose."
"I like to eat ice cream at night. I got to have something sweet before I go to sleep."

The end
"Let bye-byes be bye-byes," on settling a feud with Yankees manager Lou Piniella.

RRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR

i'm giving odds that rickey utters "rickey" within 10 seconds of his speech.

I was recently watching an old game with him playing, from 1991 or 1992 I think. He was all leg muscle, ripped. To me he's a major suspect.

Ok, Seattle1.

Ok, Seattle1.

Not to be too off topic, but I was also watching one of Nolan Ryan's no hitters vs. Toronto (had to be 1991). It was suspect city (not him, the hitters).

Don't watch track or boxing.

Most are strong, but not ripped. The one truly ripped boxer was the one who had steroid allegations, Holyfield.

There are quite a few boxers who are quite developed. When you workout as hard as they do you tend to get ripped. And boxers are always testing. Holyfield has not flunked a test. James Toney, who is hardly what one would call a fine physical specimen after fighting 30+ pounds above his natural weight class, did.

You can't tell just by looking . . .

I know he didn't flunk any tests, but there are some strong allegations against him. Was there even testing in boxing 15-20 years ago?

Sometimes you can tell by looking at someone. It truly is impossible to look like any Mr. Universe contenders without juicing. About the biggest anyone can be naturally is Gabe Kapler like. Holyfield certainly can be natural though, hope is/was.

Drug testing has been in boxing for quite some time. Steroids would be part of that.

You really can't tell by looking at someone. I would not say Holyfield, or Henderson to keep this on-topic, looked like Mr. Universe.

Are you an exercise physiologist? Do you have medical training?

You can not tell if someone is on the juice by looking at them. Check out http://www.naturalbodybuilding.com. There are lots of people that look like muscleheaded freaks that do not use 'roids or HGH. The may pay crazy attention to their diets and exercise plans and have very limited social lifes, but it is possible.

In his prime Rickey was an amazing physical specimen, but I see no reason to assume he was doing anything wrong, even though Canseco and McGwire were on his team during his MVP season.

Now if you want to see a picture of an obvious juicer check out this one:

Really, what was he thinking?

OK guys, in all honestly I just want to clarify that of course you can be as big or bigger than Evander Holyfield naturally. It takes a lot of hard work, but it can be done, providing you know how to work out and eat right. The right genetics also help.

However, you can tell sometimes who is a juicer. Look at the following two pics. The first one is from that all natural contest. The second one, well, isn't.

White Knight, your second picture is a very extreme example and really doesn't mean anything when talking about baseball players. I don't know from what competition your first picture comes from but I can tell you that there are natural body builders much more impressive than those in that picture. 2008's Mr. Olympia Dexter Jackson has not come under steroid charges as far as I know and here are pictures of him:

As far as baseball players I don't think it is right to just assume someone is using and I don't think it's possible to tell whether someone is using steroids just by looking at them. Through hard workouts and good diet it is possible to get extremely ripped, many people do this without using steroids.

Ricky still looks like he could play and might be able to help a few teams.

Maybe Rickey should make another call on behalf of Rickey so Rickey can play some baseball.

I agree 100%. It was a great speech. I expected to laugh (in a good way) when watching his speech, but didn't expect much more than that. I actually thought it was very well done, in writing it and delivering it.
