Can anyone suggest books that deal with the history of the Tigers? I am especially interested in the 1950s and integration-era information.

Thanks.

When I was a kid, I liked a book name The 999 Tigers or something like that. I believe the author was Freep writer turned baseball card show promoter Jim Hawkins.

It may not have the exact infor you're looking for, though. It's an encapsulation of all players who played for the Tigers when it was written.

There was a book called The Detroit Tigers: An Illustrated History that was written by Joe Falls that came out in the late 80's or early 90's. My uncle had a copy and I remember it being very well done. Maybe you can find it on Amazon or some other place that deals in books.

Cobb Would Have Caught It by Richard Bak is a wonderful book full of historic references, but as the title implies, it mostly covers the early 20th century.

A book that's pretty much a scholarly treatise rather than a fan's book is The Detroit Tigers: Club and Community by Patrick Harrigan. It deals with the Tigers' late run at integration, as well as the role that the team played in the 1960's changes in Detroit.
