Many of the old photographs depict most of the men and women attending Brooklyn games in suits, ties, and hats for the men, and the ladies in dresses (also with hats). As a young boy (ages 7 through 11) I wore dungarees and a t-shirt. My dad wore a suit, tie and hat (mom a dress). What do you remember wearing?

Oh man your parents were liberal. Any time we left the block, the dungarees came off and we had to wear dress clothes. I had to wear a button collar shirt and nice pants and shoes when I went to the game with my father.

I've read that in those days, there was a strong smell of cigar smoke at the old ballparks. I was commenting to someone the other day that you hardly ever see a pipe-smoker anymore.

How prevalent was either variety at Ebbets?

My dad and all his brothers smoked cigars. Cigars were ubiquitous it seems in those days.

Rory: You can see many pipe smokers at Grateful Dead Memories' shows.

The old ballparks always had a haze, especially during day games with the sunlight highlighting the smoke from all the cigars, cigarettes and pipes. I still have an extensive pipe collection, although I haven't smoked in many years.

I've had the same question jangling around in my mind for a while.

I've always wondered, maybe some of you guys can answer: what was the crowd atmosphere like back in the day? In 2009, when something exciting happens you'll see fans jumping and throwing their hands in the air and screaming, but as for way back when the cheering seemed more...polite? Maybe this is just me misinterpreting all the celebrations of championships from 1940s - 1960s.

And also, you go to a game nowadays and, unfortunately for some little kids, there's a lot of fans (some drunk) who lace every sentence with obscenities and scream out curses at umps. Were fans as loud and obnoxious back then, or was there a bit more formality to the whole ballpark experience?

"Many" fans were not rude, and a precious few threw bottles throughout the history of the park, dating back to 1913 (no more than any other park).

No mention by D'Antonio, however, about the "gang activity" that some say threaten Dodger Stadium.

Every ballpark has those couple of undesireables. D'Antonio uses the if it happened once, it must have happened all the time approach. He also tells how shabby and decrepit Ebbets Field was. I don't see anything about how the owner (O'Malley) spent no money on the upkeep of the park. Painting the seats every 2 years and changing burnt out lightbulbe was about the only maintenance, preventive or otherwise that O'Malley ever did.

They're getting generous with the term "throwback".

The jerseys that the Mets will be wearing were never worn by the Giants. It's a brand-new design that looks old fashioned, but it's not a jersey that the NY Giants ever wore.

Yes, I said they're not close to being similar.

Similarities:

1. Both have N Y on the front.

Differences:

1. Wordmark is completely different

2. Letters are a different size

3. Sleeves are a completely different short style

4. Piping on sleeves completely different

5. Button-up style completely different

6. Piping on collar completely different

1 similarity + 6 considerable differences = my opinion that it's not close to looking like an actual replica Giants jersey.

Glad you asked, so I'll tell you.

You agree with me that changing the wordmark for the B and adding a stripe on the cap means that to you it's not similar to the '55 cap.

So then why so you take issue with me when I use those exact same parameters in judging the lack of similarity of the N Y jersey?

I was making a point. If you don't agree with that, fine, let's discuss it like men. There's no reason to take things to a personal level here.

1. Thanks for being the only person so far to oblige me with civility and willingness to discuss.

2. I agree.

3. I think it would have been better to wear a replica of that design--long sleeves, pinstripes, no piping and the thinner numbers.

The design they choose is just weird and out of balance IMO. Aside from the fact that it's a new design and not a true throwback, the NY on separate breasts (early 20th century style) mixed with the short sleeves, collar and placket piping (mid-century style) is an odd match, esthetically speaking. Two different eras morphed together into a hybrid look.

These 1923 home unis were pretty sweet. They could have made the NY orange instead of red to give a real Mets flavor. The NY is already virtually the same.
