View Full Version : In your lifetime as a baseball fan, what is your all time team?

Of players who's careers overlapped with the time you have actually been a fan of baseball, what is your all time team? For some, this may be as early as the 1920s. For most, this would be somewhere between 1960 and 2000. I first started watching baseball and collecting baseball cards in 1978. That said, here's my team by position:

C: Nostalgic pick goes to Thurman Munson, but all-time pick goes to Gary Carter
1B: Nostalgic pick would go to Don Mattingly, but all time, is easily Albert Pujols
2B: Rod Carew
SS: Ozzie Smith
3B: Mike Schmidt, although George Brett gives him a run for his money as does Chipper Jones
LF: Rickey Henderson
CF: Kirby Puckett
RF: Tony Gwynn
SP: Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddux, Randy Johnson, Tom Seaver
RP: Mariano Rivera

I am sure guys like Pujols, Mauer, Utley, Santana, Halladay, Lincecum and H. Ramirez will be challenging for some of these spots somewhere down the line

This may be better suited for the History section but...

Since 1993

C - I. Rodriguez
1B - J. Bagwell
2B - R. Alomar
3B - R. Ventura
SS - B. Larkin
LF - B. Bonds
CF - A. Jones
RF - M. Ramirez
DH - F. Thomas
SP - G. Maddux
SP - R. Clemens
SP - R. Johnson
SP - P. Martinez
SP - C. Schilling
CL - M. Rivera

The reason I picked guys like I. Rodriguez, Ventura, Larkin and A. Jones over Piazza, C. Jones, A. Rodriguez and Griffey was that while they were perhaps not as valuable on offense as the latter, I felt they were superior on defense in key defensive positions. I figured the fire-power of Bonds, Thomas, Ramirez and Bagwell would off-set (somewhat) the others offensive shortcomings (when compared to their counterparts).

Great thread. I'd be happy to manage the following:

C: Johnny Bench (Started watching at the tale end of his career)
1B: Albert Pujols (Had to consider the glove of Hernandez)
2B: Craig Biggio (watched him play in H.S.)
3B: Mike Schmidt (The only pick that I didn't think about)
SS: Ozzie Smith (Gladly gave up offense to see the post game highlight reels)
LF: Ricky Henderson (arguably the most complete player of the generation)
CF: Dale Murphy (Caught HR ball at Shea when I was a kid. Huge fan since)
RF: Tony Gwynn (would like more power, but will take the average)
SP: Greg Maddux (Do I really need to say anything about him?)
RP: Dan Quisenberry (Enjoyed watching his delivery. Spent hours trying to throw like him in the backyard)

I have listed this elsewhere but my all time team is a team of players I
1) like
2) type of player I want
3) not necessarily the best (I would not argue Brett is better than Schmidt, but I prefer Brett)
4) being a Strat-O-Matic player I think in terms of seasons instead of careers (you can assemble your team and "play" them witht he cards for each player but not quite so with career numbers) so I choose the best season of my favorite players
5) favortie period is 1960s, with the 1970s a distant second, only George Brett 1980 does not come from the 1960s (5) or 1970s (3)

My Lineup
1. 1976 Joe Morgan, 2B
2. 1980 George Brett 3B
3. 1965 Willie Mays, CF
4. 1969 Willie McCovey, 1B
5. 1961 Mickey Mantle, LF (or DH)
6. 1967 Roberto Clemente, RF
7. 1970 Johnny Bench, C
8. 1974 Dave Concepcion, SS (from a SOM point of view, a 1 - SS with AA stealing and 1-17 running who could hit a little is awesome)
9. 1963 Sandy Koufax, P

more pitchers
1971 Tom Seaver
1971 Vida Blue
1969 Juan Marichal (Marichal gave up less HR than he typically did which is big in SOM, plus he led the league un ERA)
1968 Bob Gibson
1978 Ron Guidry
1969 Mike Cuellar
1977 Bruce Sutter
1973 Rollie Fingers

more position players
C 1966 Joe Torre
1B 1961 Orlando Cepeda
2B 1969 Rod Carew (after 1972 he was a poor rated fielder in SOM)
SS 1987 Ozzie Smith (he is the only reserve I seriously consider starting, just for defense)
3B 1964 Brooks Robinson
OF 1966 Frank Robinson
OF 1967 Carl Yastrzemski
OF 1971 Hank Aaron

My gosh Roy, you put Gibson on your team!

And why '63 Sandy over '66 Sandy?

there is a common feeling to put me in the "I hate Gibson" category when it is far from the truth

what I dont like is the seemingly over-emphasis on one game or one season and the constant "Bob Gibson was the reason for 1969 rule changes" and "If Bob Gibson was pitching today" and the Tim McCarver led love fest etc

Gibson was a great pitcher, I just rate him half a notch below where most others do

but if you noticed marichal makes the team/is listed before Gibson does (Lol)

as for Koufax, 1963 was his MVP season, plus he was MVP of the WS, and he struck out 15 Yankees in Yankee Stadium when they were two time defending WS champs and seemingly unbeatable

25-5 is better than 27-9

better post season performance

and great SOM card!

and were you refering to 1965? which most people like, he gave up too many HR that year for a great SOM card, much like Marichal in 1966

Why so many answers of Henderson rather than Bonds? (for those in the post-Williams era, anyway)

Personally, I enjoyed watching Henderson play more than I enjoyed watching Bonds. Just a little more exciting.

Don't get me wrong, Bonds was a phenominal player and will go down as one of the best in history, but I enjoyed watching Henderson more.

Also, Bonds just always presented himself as a Jerk. Never really liked him much.

For me it's familiarity. I watched Henderson play almost every day. The only time I got to see Bonds play was when he was in town playing against the Mets, the All Star game or when he was chasing the all time home run title.

on another "debate"

I listed Ted Williams as my 4th LF

behind Bonds (by a lot), Musial (by a hair), and Rickey (almost dead heat)

Henderson is more exciting and a nicer guy than Bonds. But there is no doubt an average team with Bonds could make the World Series (see SFG, 2002) and an average team with Rickey might struggle just to make the playoffs.

Since about 1954, when I really got interested. I'm listing only players who played most of their careers since 1954. This eliminates guys like TWilliams, Musial, Spahn, Berra, Snider, etc.- all of whom I saw play a lot.

2B. Morgan 2B. Biggio

RF. Aaron RF. F. Robinson
SP. Clemens SP. Gibson
SP. Maddux SP. Marichal
SP. Seaver SP. Koufax
SP. R. Johnson SP. P. Martinez
RP. Rivera RP. Gossage

Very close- F. Thomas, who was as good a hitter as Pujols over the first half of his career. Also, Alomar and Sandberg are close behind Biggio.

For the record, Sandy Koufax from 62-66 was the greatest pitcher I ever saw. Factoring in career, he falls to my second team.

Was wondering what sort of excuse the Henerson backers would have.

And it's a good one. Don't give a doody about "nicer", but Ricky sure was fun to watch. Gotta give you that one.

On BB's "niceness" :

I met BB at a local movie theatre, he was with his sons (or likely son+friend) and got in line behind my son playing an arcade game. We was cordial enough, but I didn't hound him for any autograph either. And there's enough positive reports from teammates that seem to be disregarded.

I don't think he was a great teammate, but not nearly as bad as many seem to think either. Reporters did have it in for him (self fullfilling thing there) after all.

C) Mike Piazza
1B) Albert Pujols
2B) Roberto Alomar (but this could change, I'm drawing a blank here for some reason)
3B) Wade Boggs
SS) Derek Jeter
LF) Barry Bonds
CF) Ken Griffey Jr.
RF) Tony Gwynn
DH) Frank Thomas
SP) Roger Clemens, Randy Johnson, Pedro Martinez, Greg Maddux, Nolan Ryan
CL) Mariano Rivera, Dennis Eckersly

I will say this: Yes, Nolan Ryan is over-rated, but besides the four I listed in front of him, I don't see anyone better over the last 25 years. To me at least, I'd take him any day over Mussina or Schilling.
