PLEASE READ BEFORE VOTING!

Format and Rules
Voting Rules: Voters may vote for between 0-15 candidates. Votes will be made public, and voters are encouraged to post their ballots in the thread and not view results before voting. PLEASE LIMIT YOUR BALLOT TO 15 VOTES AT MOST. EXCESS VOTES MAY RESULT IN YOUR BALLOT BEING DISQUALIFIED.
-Blank Ballots: A "None of the Above" option is available if you believe no one is worthy and you wish to submit a blank ballot. This option is not to be taken lightly and it is strongly urged that it be used only after the utmost consideration, as non-votes carry great weight. Additionally, if using this option, please post your rationale.

Voting Criteria: Players are to be evaluated within the context of the era in which they played and the history of the game to that point. Players are not to be held to standards that would materialize at a time beyond the year of the current election. Modern statistical analysis is permitted but must be applied strictly within historical context not to go beyond the year of the current election. Players are to be judged based solely on their playing careers. Other, non-playing contributions may be considered to the extent that they coincided with a player's playing career (such as a player/manager).

Thoughtfulness and Editing Ballots: Please review and thoughtfully consider the candidates before voting, and make sure you have accurately filled out your ballot before submitting. Requests for editing ballots after the fact will generally not be honored. Exceptions might be made if a voter accidentally voted for the wrong player or accidentally went over the voting limit (but I strongly encourage you to do your best to prevent either from happening).

Required Support: Players receiving at least 75% support in an election will be elected. Players need at least 5% support to appear on the next ballot.

Player Eligibility: Players eligible for an election will have last played at least 5 years prior to the election year and have appeared in at least 10 Major League seasons. If a player appeared in less than 10 seasons, he may still be eligible if he had a minimum of 3000 PAs or 1500 IP, though extra scrutiny will be applied. Players will remain on the ballot for 15 years, provided they continue to receive at least 5% of the vote, at which point they will become indefinitely eligible for periodic elections conducted by the Veterans Committee.
- Age Exception: For players 40 or older, they will become eligible the later of either 5 years after their last year of continuous play, or their first inactive year at age 45 or older.
- Death Exception: For players who meet the criteria for consideration, but die before their first year of eligibility can have the five year waiting period waived and placed on the ballot the year of death.

Election Period: Elections will close exactly one week after starting. The next election might not commence for another day or two.

Conduct Policy: Every vote is a voter's opinion on who should be elected to the Hall of Fame. It is our responsibility as voters to be respectful towards each other. Personal attacks should not be tolerated and you should notify a moderator rather than allowing an argument to escalate and further derail discussion of the candidates.

got real stingy and cut out Cuyler - I think growing up and seeing his numbers put it in my head he was right below an all-time great. With the benefit of historical perspective (and a post prompting a closer look last go around) he was a good player whose numbers looked great, especially in a 70s context, but were partly a product of their time.

what I have left is and I'm not 100% on them either:

My ballot:

Wally Berger
Tommy Bridges
Wes Ferrell
Lefty Gomez
Bob Johnson
Dixie Walker

This year would be a good year to campaign for Wes Ferrell. With Eppa Rixey, Burleigh Grimes, Sam Rice, Rabbit Maranville, and Hack Wilson all expiring after 15 years on the ballot without getting there, his chances are probably slim, but he is the best of this group and has the strongest support.

Next year, we have 1st timers Luke Appling and Joe Gordon. Given the company Appling will see on the ballot, and given how handily Medwick was elected, Appling should sail right in. Joe Gordon will have an uphill battle, but he also has a good chance at election.

Looking ahead the next few elections, we have some players who will draw some support and discussion as well as several standouts:

1955: Luke Appling, Joe Gordon, Tommy Henrich, Ken Keltner,
Bucky Walters

1956: Joe DiMaggio, Bobby Doerr, Wally Moses, Johnny Van Der Meer

1957: Lou Boudreau

1958: Dom DiMaggio, Bob Elliott, Marty Marion, Johnny Mize,
Harry Brecheen, Dutch Leonard

Player Eligibility: Players eligible for an election will have last played at least 5 years prior to the election year and have appeared in at least 10 Major League seasons. If a player appeared in less than 10 seasons, he may still be eligible if he had a minimum of 3000 PAs or 1500 IP, though extra scrutiny will be applied.
There have been other less-than-10-year men. Socks Seybold was a greater player than Wright, on the ballot but he didn't get any votes. Pitcher Addie Joss was slowly elected.

Apparently heavy discounting of the war years will be the norm in this project, with the (almost) complete lack of support that guys like Galen, Cooper, and Walker are getting, even from the big-hall voters.

--You do have to discount those years somewhat. If a players track record before and after the war suggests they weren't really that great then that is a big negative for me. This may be unfair to players whose expected peak would fall into that timeframe, but that is my position for now. The examples you give would not be HoFers for me even with 100% credit for their war years anyway. The guy who probably takes the biggest hit is Bob Johnson who enjoyed his best seasons during the war when you would otherwise expect him to be in decline.

I would probably vote for Walker if not for discounting his war years, but I agree that Cooper and Galan belong on the outside regardles. But there's other players on this ballot getting more support who I'd say are less worthy if you take their war numbers at face value. Bottomley, Manush, and Ferrell, for example, I'd all put behind Walker and Galan.

It will be interesting to see how Newhouser gets treated.

I think that's stretching it on Johnson. He maybe had his best year in 1944, though 1934 & 1937 were probably very close when you factor how much better he was in the field and on the basepaths earlier in his career. But his 1942, 1943, 1945 seasons were all below his 1930's peak years in quality.

And I would guess the huge uptick in production in 1944 had more to do with being a RH pull hitter playing his home games in Fenway than it did war-weakened competition.

--Newhouser is in a different class than the above. His career arc was pretty normal - or normal for a superstar anyway. He was good enough to contribute to a pennant winner at 19 in 1940 and flashed plenty of talent going forward. 1946 was as great as 44-45 and he was an All Star caliber pitcher several more years before his arm gave out at 30 (again pretty normal for a flame thrower who got called up so young). Taken at face value he is very similar to Koufax. With the war discount he is still a top 30 pitcher IMO. That is a definate Hall of Famer.

I agree. Though I've got him more around #35. But he should be an easy first ballot HoFer when you compare him to the pitchers we've already elected.

Though taken at face value, Mort Cooper is somewhat similar to Koufax as well. Late bloomer, big short peak, with his career pretty much finished by his early 30's due to arm problems.

And he matches up pretty well to Dizzy Dean, taken at face value. Dean had 5 full seasons, then a season cut short by injury, and than essentially nothing after that. Cooper had 6 full seasons, then a season cut short by injury, and then just one pretty good year after that.

Dean 1932-1937: 133-75, 131 ERA+, 1728 IP, 23 Shutouts, 196 PRAA, 1 MVP, 2 2nd place finishes. 2-1 with a 1.73 ERA in the World Series.

Cooper 1939-1945: 110-53, 132 ERA+, 1534 IP, 25 Shutouts, 118 PRAA, 1 MVP, 1 5th place finish. 2-3 with a 3.00 ERA in the World Series.

Ferrell's a new vote for me. Not because he could hit. Honestly would you vote against a pitcher because of his hitting or fielding abilities or lack of? No, I voted for him because he was a good pitcher on some rotten teams. If you voted for Ted Lyons, Ferrell deserves a look.

Ferrell, at 19 of 27 total votes, would need to go 5 for 5 to reach 75%--and he's the closest. No one else has more than a snowball's chance in a blast furnace.

On another note, all the folks who voted in the prior attempt at 1954 have voted in this election.

Based purely on pitching, I don't see much of a comparison between Lyons and Ferrell. Lyons finished with a higher career ERA+ and did so despite pitching 1500 more innings than Ferrell. That's a pretty big difference. Even when you factor in Ferrell's hitting (which you said you didn't), I don't think it makes up the gap, especially when you consider Lyons was a decent hitting-pitcher in his own right (though not on Ferrell's level).

Lyons also has 67 more wins than Ferrell, which probably counts for quite a bit with some voters, and if not for missing three seasons to WWII, Lyons may have reached 300. Given Lyons' age at the time (41), his chances at getting to 300 are debatable, but consider that in his last season before military service he led the league in ERA and ERA+ and had 14 wins, and then came back four years later at age 46 and continued to be highly effective (albeit in a small sample), it's plausible to believe he could have been effective enough from 1943-1945 to make 300 wins a reality. Then again, he retired upon being named manager during the 1946 season, so he may have hung them up earlier had he been around during 1943-1945 and been named manager during that time.

Henrich, to me, is an interesting candidate. Although he had a relatively short career, he played in 4 World Series with the Yanks (all of which were victories), missed 3 seasons due to service during WWII, and had a lifetime OPS+ of 132 as (primarily) a corner outfielder. In a little over 5400 PA's he had a WARP3 of almost 50 and from what I know wasn't a terrible fielder (confirmation?). It will remain true unless all prominent veterans, at least, come to earn regular salary money like the biggest bonuses we have seen paid to promising amateurs. Even then some may see a first minor league job as the maybe fleeting chance to establish a lifelong career.

Keep this in mind instead of putting too much weight on career records in detail, or the achievement of particular milestones.

From what I've read he was at least an above average fielder, and probably better than that. BP's metrics seem to rate him quite highly in RF.

His career also got off to somewhat of a late start, as he was illegaly stashed away in the minors by the Indians before being awarded his free agency and signing with the Yankees in '37.

In the late 1930s all three outfielders George Selkirk, Tommy Henrich, and Charlie Keller played less than they would have played for any other major league team (not to mention a modern one with a DH). With Joe DiMaggio they were too many good hitters for one outfield.

We ended up with only 2 candidates that managed over 60% of the vote: Wes Ferrell and Lefty Gomez. Outside of them, Wally Berger held steadfast, Tommy Bridges broke 43% for the 1st time, Bob Johnson holds around 50% and Ernie Lombardi managed 40%.

Kiki Cuyler, Chuck Klein and Tony Lazzeri are the only others who had 10 or more votes in their favor.

Outside of them, no other holdover managed even 20% of the popular vote.

There are 13 holdovers carrying over to the next election with minimal support:

Jim Bottomley
Earle Combs
Paul Derringer
Rick Ferrell
Augie Galan
Babe Herman
Heinie Manush
Buddy Myer
Cecil Travis
Hal Trosky

I think the next election is going to be fairly interesting. While I think Appling and Gordon are very strong candidates, I don't think either really jumps off the screen - I'll be voting for them without hesitation, but they aren't very exciting candidates. That latter tidbit seems to hurt many deserving candidates, though that's usually sorted out after a couple cycles.

I'm most intrigued by Henrich, Keltner, and Walters. I can see an argument being made for all three, though I doubt that any will see their way into the Hall.

Does anyone have the fielding data for Henrich and Keltner? Keltner's usually described as a excellent third baseman, but I cannot seem to find much on him...

I think Walters has the HoF peak*, but the fact that it ran through WW2 will derail any chance of him getting elected. That, and his career ERA+ of 115 won't cut it, given how Wes Ferrell has struggled to get elected.

* Walters 1939-1946: 141-90, 2030 IP, 135 ERA+. 1 MVP (also finished 3rd and 5th in MVP voting). Lead league in ERA+ twice, IP 3 times, Wins Twice, Complete Games 3 times, and K's once.

And his peak run would look better if not for his 1943 season when he pitched with an injured leg and an irregular appendix the whole season, and posted an ERA+ of 94 in 246 IP.

Like Dazzy Vance, his pitching career didn't take off until he was in his 30's. Walters was in IF who was converted to pitcher at age 25 when it was discovered he threw a natural sinker. He spent the rest of his 20's learning how to pitch in the majors, a sinkerballer on a terrible defensive Phillies team - a disasterous combo for his ERA.

But the rest of the league knew how good he was. He was an All-Star in 1937, despite being a .500 pitcher on a terrible team with a 90 ERA+. Cincy traded for him in 1938, despite that fact that he was off to a terrible start. The Cincy GM told his owner "We can buy Walters from Philadelphia, and it may mean a pennant by 1939". And he was right. The Reds won the NL the next two years, and Walters was NL MVP in 1939, and was the best pitcher in the NL both years. And in 1940, he led them to a World Series title over Detroit by pitching two complete game victories, posting a 1.50 ERA and a .778 WHIP in his two starts.

He never matched those two great years, but the next year, in 1941, he was still probably the 2nd best pitcher in the NL. In 1942 he was one of the top 5 pitchers in the NL. And in 1944, healthy again after his injury plagued 1943 season, he was again the best pitcher in the NL.

And in addition to his pitching excellence, he was also a very good hitter for a pitcher. His career OPS+ was 69, and during his monster Triple Crown winning 1939 season, he posted a 111 OPS+ in 131 PA's. He was also a well above average fielder.

And despite spending the first 4 years of his career as a part-time infielder, he managed to post a career WARP3 score of 72.7, which is in line with a number of our current HoF pitchers like Coveleski (69.7), Vance (74.3), Dean (54.8), and Faber (68.1).
