I lucked out, we were forced into a 3+ week trip up north for 2 weddings, and inbetween them we decided to visit our friends in Cleveland. It was after we decided that, that i found out the National was there, and I have only one shot at going, Thursday, as thursday nite we are driving to New York.

Cut that one close, but lucked out, will spend as much time there as I can. It will only be the third national I have been to, I went to the two in Arlington around 1986 and 1990 since i have a friend there. Looking forward to it, and I guy I know thru the net is going too (he lives there), and I will go with him.

Hopefully I can find some neat old Yankee cards, but its just fun walking around and seeing stuff you just dont see at local shows or stores.

I am seriously considering it, if I do not have concrete plans for that weekend. I went a little over a decade ago (I think that was 1997) and really enjoyed it.

Actually I may be able to go. I haven't been to a convention, do signers usually personalize at these or not?

Not direct personalization, while most charge for additional information like HOF or ROY, etc.

I hear its in Baltimore next year. I can drive that.
Has it ever been in NYC? or is there a list of where it will be in the next few years?

I plan on making the trip from Connecticut. My brother lives in Akron so my son and I will be staying with him. I plan on going to the show on Thu, Fri, and Sat and probably catching a Tribe game on Friday Night. The only thing to stop me will be work. :crossfingers:

I need 88 cards to complete my 1952 to 2000 Topps run. Hopefully I'll be able to know off a handful of them.

The Tribe is giving extra value this year. Almost all their home games are guaranteed to have a bottom of the ninth. :hissyfit:

If you have an extra 1952 Mantle laying around that would help.

I find the beat thing to do with those old Topps wrappers is to burn them. Those old wrappers burn slowly and consistently (Great for marshmellows!)

At the moment, I am planning on attending the National Show in Cleveland. Subject to change, of course (per wife). While my intent is to find an autograph or two on my want list (that I can afford), success at past National shows has been very limited. But that disappointment is offset by the opportunity to see amazing memorabilia and vintage sportscards. It's also a great opportunity to meet and greet dealers. It's a mixed bag with dealers; some very friendly and pleasant; others not so.

I believe the next two National Shows (2010 and 2011) are planned for Baltimore, MD, and then back to Chicago. Biggest knock against having a show in the NYC/NJ area has been quoted as being the cost for a venue with adequate dealer space. Chicago and Cleveland are frequent sites due to a combination of their central U.S. locale (making both fairly accessible to both East coast, West coast, and Southern dealers and collectors) and cost of the facility. After all, sports cards and memorabilia are a hobby to some, and a business for others.

So who is going what day?It seems like dabigyankeeman will be there Thursday. Utter Chaos (and son?) will be there Thursday through Saturday. RMB can go anytime he pleases. I will probably go Sunday. I know finding a hotel will be tough, as I have not booked one yet. It seems every time I go to Cleveland and stay I have a dickens of a time finding a room when it's not planned. I have other things in the area I'd like to do and don't want to rush my way through them.

Who else might be going?

I'd like to visit the Garfield home in Mentor, for one. It's the only Presidential site in Ohio I really haven't seen. I've stopped by the house before it was open a few years ago. There's also University Circle and its many museums.

Of course, the Tigers are at Progressive that weekend. I'd rather spend Saturday evening there than at whichever Winking Lizard I'm closest to. :D

Cool. My kids high school is James Garfield, since I believe he attended Hiram College

They are opening their gates earlier if you like batting practice

Yes, it looks like me and my son will be there Thursday through Saturday. Maybe even Sunday till noon if I have any money left.

If any of the Baseball-Fever regulars want to meet up at the show to B.S or whatever shoot me an message and I'll give you my cell phone number.

Sure it is. My first visit (as an adult) to Cleveland I somehow wound up at the Winking Lizard in Independence and really enjoyed myself. And have on subsequent visits. That one remains a go-to simply for nostalgic reasons.

Yes. For the National ten+ years ago, I just drove up and tried to find a place near the airport. No luck. After trying a few more exits I wound up in Independence. I liked it and generally have stayed around there.

In my opinion, that's the best area to stay in the Cleveland area, mainly because of the proximity to 77 and 480.

I remember going to the National around ten years ago.

So, who all did go and when? Impressions?

I didn't make it unil 1 Sunday. (Danged downtown and the timing of their traffic lights.) I don't think this one was as big as the one a dozen years ago, but lots of great stuff to be purchased and seen.

For those of us who couldn't make it, Bill Simmons, an ESPN writer, took a ton of pictures and wrote a good article about it. Definitely worth a look. He went for basketball stuff but lots of good baseball pictures.
