Check out this page on Steve Garvey's website:

Is this downright hilarious or downright sad?

HAHA!! I didn't even read your post in the Garvey thread until now, I just stumbled across Garvey's site coincidentally!

LOL...even funnier then. :) Ah Garvey...your head is bigger than the sun and full of the same hot air.

It is Garvey's site, but I wonder if he simply paid somebody to put it together and run it.

No matter, it's a true exercise in humility. Hard to believe now, but when he was playing, there really were very few players as highly regarded as he was.

It's not hard to have flawless defense when you don't move from one spot.

Well, that is movement.

always with the technicalities.

If the site went by the technicalities, you'd get to miss the shallowest assessment of a player I've ever seen.

For once, the sizzle was just seen as such. Most stopped believing the hype, even if it took something that is probably quite common to happen.

I wasn't alive for most of Garvey's career, but I get the impression that the hype surrounding him as a player was not unlike the hype currently surrounding Derek Jeter. Is that a reasonable assumption? They both did/do the overrated things (hit for average, garner high hit totals, etc.) well, but get chewed up and spit out by sabermetric analysis. As I see it, Garvey's pretty far back in the line of HOF-eligible first basemen, and several more will soon take their spots in front of him too.

pretty compelling argument actually. Im curious does anyone know how many 10 time all stars haven't been elected?

Of the ones who aren't active, recently retired, or banned (Rose) or tained by PED's (McGwire):

Bill Freehan - 11 times
Red Schoendienst - 10 times

Larkin and Alomar were both 12-time all stars, so potentially one of them could join that list. Nellie Fox was a 12-time all star who went in via the Vet committee. Billy Herman, Johnny Mize, George Kell, Pee Wee Reese, and Enos Slaughter were all 10-time all stars who went in via the Vet Committee.

So it's not unprecidented to for the BBWAA to not elect 10+ time all stars.

I could see Garvey's case if he really was a great BA guy who didn't walk a lot or hit for a lot of power. But his lifetime BA was only .294. It's not like he was Rod Carew or Tony Gwynn or Bill Terry. To me he's just a modern version of Pie Traynor, except Traynor was a legendary defensive player at 3B while Garvey was just a 4-time GG winner at 1B.

Schoendienst is in via the Vet Committee.
