I think everyone has heard of Manny playing "rehab" games. I am not the biggest Manny fan because of his Manny being Manny and playing on the Red Sox. But, I think i am right by saying that Manny should not be able to play until his 50 game Major League Suspension is over. I think that since he is susepened he should not be able to play in any baseball activty, that has nothing to do with on the field play. I have never heard this much talk about a player who coming from "rehab" but this is just my 2 cents. What does everyone else think on the issue of Manny.

I was shocked as well. I didn't know this was allowed.
Was Manny exactly 'injured'?
If a player is suspended from the MLB, can he play in AAA for the entirety of his suspension?

If a player is suspended in the minor leagues he can't come back early. Why should a major league player be able to play in minor league ball while he is still suspended?

I was also very surprised when I heard this. Apparently in the agreement concerning the current drug testing and suspensions. Players that are suspended for violating the drug policy are allowed to play in AAA games in order to get back in to playing shape..
"During the term of his suspension, a Player may consent to an assignment to a Minor League affiliate of his Club under the terms of Article XIX(C)(1) and (3), except as modified above with respect to salary and except that such assignment shall not exceed five (5) days (eight (8) days for pitchers) for a Player suspended for a period of 25 games or less, and shall not exceed ten (10) days (16 days for pitchers) for a Player suspended for a period of between 26 and 50 games."

This has been consistent with all players that have received a PED suspension
Would you be happier if they changed the suspenstion to 45 days and didn't allow minor league rehab during the suspension? Would get pretty much the same result

I heard its part of the current agreement/program that if you get the 50 game suspension you can come back and play in up to 10 rehab games. If thats the current plan, then it is stupid. If you are suspended 50 games you shouldnt be allowed in any organized stuff for 50 games. Then you can come back and start your rehab.

I agree with you, he should not be able to play in the Majors OR Minors until his suspension is fully up. That is way too lenient. No cutting corners!

I think he should be bannished for life. I think it's the only fair punishment.

Just imagine how few cheaters we'f have in the game if we gave out lifetime bans for using illegal substances! Sure, a lot of guys would be ousted if such measures were taken, but that would be even better, because it would be sending a message out that baseball doesn't tolerate such action. Because of the current policy, we will never be rid of steroids in the game.

Thanks for the rule explanation, as I was also very surprised that he was able to play any level of MLB while suspended. I guess the rule is good if the player does it without pay, and from what I understand a lot of the young guys in the 'A' league enjoyed the experience of playing alongside Manny, including Don Mattingly's son.

I can only hope your employer is so strict.
P.S. - The deadball era sucked.

Baseball has tolerated so much else previously, some a lot worse than substances that for all intents and purposes do not work too great unless your workout ethic is beyond incredible. But why let details get in the way when everything can be swept away like so much dust?

just like how people don't murder anymore in Texas because there is a death penalty...oh wait.
the olympics have much stricter bans...and one ban could mean you miss your chance to be in the Olympics or win a medal. Yet every year people cheat. So the idea that banning for life you will stop PED's is laughable.

I like the coverage a player banned for using a illegal substance and is currently "rehab" is receiving from the media.

how about the coverage the all-star balloting has received. Its great that the media led a charge to keep Manny out of the game (which he probably wouldn't have showed up to anyways) but now that he is 6th I don't need a regular update of where he is in the balloting.
