Let's see, uniform retirements so far I know of were the dual 31s for the Cubs of Fergie Jenkins and Greg Maddux back in May, and Maddux is due to get 31 put in mothballs by the Braves next month.

Any others? Are plans under way for 24 in Oakland and 14 in Boston?

Wikipedia claims that Harold Baines will get his number retired by the Orioles, but I see no such reference to it anywhere else on the internet, he is going into the Oriole HOF this year though. Likewise Maddux in the Braves HOF, anyone know of other team specific HOF enshrinement for 2009?

I can definitely see Rickey Henderson's #24 being retired by Oakland.

However, has Rickey been seen as during his post-Oakland years as a member of the Athletics family? I believe that proximity to the team, even if to appear at team-sponsored charity events, which could be a key towards retiring his number.

I remember that it was only about 5 years ago that Reggie Jackson's #9 was retired by Oakland.

Since his #44 had already been retired by the Yankees for several years before this, and since Jackson has been a special instructor with the Yankees during Spring Training, even helped out a few guys like Raul Mondesi and A-Rod when they needed help, he ingratiated himself with the Yankees' front office.

I know it sounds silly, especially since I've heard that Henderson was wildly popular in Oakland, but what has Rickey Henderson done for the A's after having left them? He was out playing baseball for the Newark Bears, not being a goodwill ambassador for the A's.

True being around the club after you stop playing can push a maybe into a yes for number retiring, but Rickey did enough on the field that he could have never gone back to Oakland since he stopped playing and not many would have a second thought about retiring his number.

FWIW, there are Henderson themed events on the A's schedule around one weekend in August. While a formal announcement hasn't been made yet, at least not in the MLB.com news database apparently, I'd suspect they will during that weekend.

Though the Yankees DID plan to honor Dave Winfield by retiring 31 after his induction into Cooperstown, but decided against it after Winfield chose (or according to rumor was paid to do so) to have a Padre logo on his plaque.

Obviously now Henderson has no choice, but then again, could it be anyone BUT the A's on Rickey's plaque cap? The Yankees with 4 and a half seasons was his second longest tenure besides the A's.

THE PHILLIES HAVE CHOSEN ANNOUNCER HARRY KALAS FOR THEIR WALL of FAME THIS YEAR. THERE WILL BE NO PLAYER SELECTIONS.
Unofficially, their PR depatment told me that they may elect two candidates per year, for a while, beginning as early as the next election in 2010.
In the past The Phillies had used fan votes during the Winter to narrow the field to five candidates, who would then be voted on by a Phillies executives committee to select one individual for The Wall. Since fans never or rarely voted for players out of the distant past who played for the team 50 or more years ago, the players in this group were at a distinct disadvantage for being nominated. In the future, perhaps by next year, the fans will again submit nominations for the finalists and they'll elect a fairly recent player. The Phillies executives will also elect by committee a deserving second player, who played for the team at least 50 years ago.
(50 years is an example - a firm cutoff point has yet to be established.).
This second election will cover every player from the inception of the team in 1883 through about 1950, 1955, or 1960.
So they will elect one Modern candidate and one Historical candidate who played for the Phillies at least a half century ago.

That's appropriate.
