It took quite a while for me to realize how great a player Jones was. He just kept playing well and still is.
He had a scandal early in his career, fathering a child with a waitress. But I guess he took full responsibility there. Can't ask for more than that if you're outside the situation.

I thank the Van Poppels for the end result of their dizzying hubris every day.

eh, that never really bothered me. he was young, how many young people did the same? as long as he takes responsibility, thats all that really matters to me.

One of the best, without question.
ol' aches and pains

I've got to admire him, he's been with the same team his entire career. How rare is that these days? He's a sure-fire HOF'r when he hangs them up.
I just wish he would go by Larry, what kind of name is Chipper for a grown man?

I don't ever recall anyone "knocking" a young Chipper Jones.

Oh, they were there, Sam. Trust me.
After his first season of rookie ball (.229 with 1 homer in 140 at bats) there were whispers that the Braves had picked another Tyler Houston.

Me, either, for exactly the same reasons as you state. We've had members on this board, though, who really railed against him because of that indiscretion.

I hope they weren't too loud. Wanting to say someone's a bust after one year of rookie ball is a little trigger-happy.

That is something I really like to see too. It is impossible to over-appreciate that, to me. To tell you the truth I never really paid all that much attention to him over his career for some reason, but I am aware he's a good player.
The only thing about him was he was really lobbying Griffey hard to play in Atlanta this year. But I don't really hold that against him, especially in light of the fact that Griffey came to play in Seattle after all.

That is a problem with her, not him. She is the one who has the choice to have an abortion, not him. The paternity suit situation is fundamentally very sexist. I have no respect for women who have babies and then ask for money. I don't blame him a bit. I would respect her far more is she had decided to have an abortion.
Chipper is an easy HOF selection.
Remember who the Braves were intent on picking? Todd Van Poppel, thank god he did not want to sign with them.

Folks, whether you agree or disagree with dl or not in regards to the above, this is not the place the situation as described. It ends here. It wasn't even supposed to get to this point . . .

LARRRYYYYYY from the Met fans, as he proceeded to beat them
Tim McKnowitall saying "he needs to show me something"
He was , pre JD Drew, JD Drew light ,with his dad involved and nailed by media

I forget exactly what he said, but he said something along the lines of Met fans having to put on Yankee hats during the playoffs. He's also come off as whiny. Recent examples include when he seemed to complain about the Mets acquiring K-Rod and Putz and just recently about how Citi Field is big. I'm sure he threw his remote at the TV when he saw the highlights of last nights game (7 HRs combined by both teams).
Met fans chanting "Larry" isn't knocking him. I think he likes it anyway. He killed the Mets over his career so the fans know how good he is better than most others (outside of Braves fans). And I think most Met fans would admit they have a begrudging respect for him.
I would like to if he'd rather be booed or receive a bit of an ovation in his last AB in Citi Field.

Oh man where I start with Chipper? The folks here in Atlanta love him! Chipper is even a household name even the non-sports fans use around here. Although I have heard stories of him being rather rude and disrespectful, he is still one of my many heroes and a terrific ball player. Hopefully in about 10-15 years he will be inducted, and will be known as a longtime Brave. Best regards to you Sire Jones. :gt

You have to realize, I wasn't even a Braves fan when he was drafted (I was seven in 1990 and didn't discover baseball until 1991. I appreciate how lucky I am). I only vaugely remember that Chipper broke his leg in 1994 in spring training; I recall hearing Ron Gant broke his leg in a motorcycle accident more clearly.
The earliest thing I can remember feeling/thinking about Chipper is that he was snubbed for the NL Rookie of the Year. I didn't think Hideo Nomo had any business winning it. Naturally, I was aa 12-year old homer by then.

It is a knock. The story goes that Chipper told Mike Piazza that he HATED his given name for whatever reason.
The NY Media, and by extention the entire Mets fanbase caught wind of it, and have been calling him Larry ever since.

Same thing. Jones the competitor may not mind, but it is not meant as playful acknowledgment.

I think it's more of a heckling taunt than a knock on his abilities.

What's really funny about it, there was a popular wrestler in WCW named Goldberg, and for some reason known only to them, WCW thought that chanting the name in that sing-song fashion was not derrisive at all, so they piped it into the PA system wherever they were, and made it part of his theme song entrance.
Yup, GOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLDDDDDDDDDD-BERG!

Then you've rarely been to any baseball games live have you?
The Red Sox fans will boo any no name Yankee that gets introduced, Met fans will boo any no name Phillie that gets introduced, Yankee fans will boo any unknown Red Sox, Met, or whomever that gets inroduced, Cub fans will boo any unknown Cardinal that gets introduced, etc.

I've been to many games.
My point is Met fans chanting "Larry" is not the same as people saying Chipper would never be a good player when he was young.

But wouldn't that follow the old tradition of the fans chanting out wrestler names when they wanted someone to come out from the back to help save the fallen hero in the ring or something similar. When I was a kid in the 80's that's how they did it, especially for Andre the Giant.
Yours is a good point, 523. They're taunting Jones with something he doesn't care for, trying to get under the skin of an opponent. It's not a mark against his ability. Since the pitchers can't get him out as often as they'd like . . .

Exactly. For Belle, the first name switch meant he fet he was changed from the personal issues he had at the young age when he was known as Joey. For Jones, he hated all the Newhart jokes.
