If Joe Mauer, or whoever, accomplished the following three things, then would you consider him to have hit .400 in the same way you consider Ted Williams to have hit .400

1. Mauer ends the season with a batting average over .400 (say .420).

2. Mauer is twenty or thirty at bats short of the minimum to qualify for the batting title.

3. Even if Mauer were to get those extra at bats to qualify and went 0 for 20 or 0 for 30, he would still be over .400 (say .402).

^^ In that case, he would still win the official batting title with a legitimate .400+ BA.

Based on the 55 games the Twins had played so far Mauer needs to have 171 plate appearances to quality for the batting title right now. He currently has 130 plate appearances. If he plays full time the rest of the season he should reach the 502 plate appearnaces needed.

Under that scenario all his needed PA's to make it up to 502 are counted as a hitless AB. So if you include those and he still is over .400 its not a matter of whether i would consider it a legit .400 since he will be official in every way.
