Hint: This player came to the Tigers in a seven player deal in 1970.
ryors
06-04-2009, 02:16 PM
Tram2Lou is correct.... it is Joe Coleman.
Joe came to the Tigers along with Ed Brinkman, Jim Hannan, and Aurelio Rodriguez in 1970 for Elliot Maddox, Denny McClain, Norm McRae, and Don Wert.
After being named to the All-Star team in 1972, his best year as a Tiger was 1973 when he went 23-15 with a 3.53 ERA in 288 innings. He threw 13 complete games that year.
A quality Tiger, who was purchased by the Chicago Cubs in 1976.
Now Tram2Lou it is your turn.... post 'em and we will try to figure out your "Name this Tiger".
Sincerely,

How do you even go about "cheating" when figuring out a photo? You can't just Google that like you do with a trivia question.
Tigers527 got it correct. The photo is that of former Tigers' catcher, Hank Riebe. Riebe played four years for Detroit in 1942 and from 1947-49. In between stints he was awarded two purple hearts in WWII.

Lemme start by saying I did not intentionally set about this trying to cheat. What I did since the picture you posted was rather small I copied the pic to my desk top intending on zooming in on the fellow, well once I looked at the pic file on said desk top, it had the file name Harvey Riebe, well from there it was pretty easy figuring out who the guy was.

Although, Warren Spahn played the majority of his career after being awarded both the Purple Heart and the Bronze Star. I would have to think after facing the Nazis at the Battle of the Bulge, going up against Musial and Mays must have literally felt like child's play.

They lived on the same street at the same time, my father as a kid and Newhouser as a Tiger. He was a clubhouse kid for the team growing up, so he knew all the players. When he and I went to Cooperstown a few years back, he spent a lot of time in the library looking up the players who would babysit him in the dugout (no stars) while my grandfather sold programs. The biggest name he actually got close to as a kid was Billy Pierce.
He's never really talked much about it. I guess he doesn't think it was such a big deal. I'll ask him who he really knew and about Newhouser next time I see him.
If I could figure out how to paste a picture . . .

That's remarkable about your father. People write books about things like that, y'know. The fly-on-the-wall vantage point.

I believe it is Pat Underwood.
And now .... for the extra credit....
Pat made his debut on May 31, 1979 at Toronto's Exhibition Stadium against the Blue Jays. The starting pitcher that night for the Jays just happened to be Pat's brother Tom.
Tigers won the game 1-0. Pat threw 8 1/3 innings not giving up a run and allowing only 3 hits. Dave Tobik (Ohio University) relieved Pat after Pat had given up a double to Alfredo Griffin with one out in the 9th. Tobik got Bob Bailor to fly out. John Hiller then relieved Tobik and struck out Roy Howell to pick up a save and preserve the win for Pat.
Just for the record, Tom Underwood threw a complete game that night giving up only six hits. The toughest part for Tom was probably the fact that the loss dropped his record to 0-7 at that point.
Nice one... and I like the extra credit.......
Let me know if I did ok on this one......

BTW, as Kirk Gibson was mentioned, the reason I referred to him in a previous post as the worst Tiger ever was because of his boorish (d**kish?) behavior with the fans at Tiger Stadium.

I do remember being at Tiger Stadium when Steve Kemp made his first appearance there as a White So(ck)x. Everybody had fun booing him. It was also the first time I saw those horrible SOX uniforms, and that was 1982, so it's not that big of a blank.

There are a few things that I have done, which I'd like to do over. The first thing was that whole 'pledge of allegiance' business. The second regret was the liquidation of my card collection.
I'm not sure that I could actually name a single current Pittsburgh Pirate, but I could name that Joe Sparma card.

Go for it. Several teams have similar-type threads.
I just have done google searches for the couple I have posted. Of course, the Tigers have about a century's worth of players on the Rays.
