Hello,

Above is a link to my son's high school games hitting clips ( sophomore) this year. Overall he has been hitting ok, but I am sure there is always room for improvement.

Please feel free to comment or give suggestions.

Thanks a million,

ssdad

I like what I see. He shows great intent. Where are you located?

Very nice, I'd suggest that you introduce a bit more of a load to his swing and then watch out. It's amazing how quick he is already from almost a dead start.

The difference will be like starting a race standing still when they suddenly yell "GO" or being able to rock backwards and then forward, and then as you are beginning to rock forward they yell "GO" . . . how would you like to start the race if given a choice?

That was their JV team?

The load in the 2nd clip looks pretty good, seems to have some hip coil and he loads his hands as he strides. In the first clip he loads his hands, then strides.

I don't see whole lot to change at first glance except for the mentioned timing/loading issue. I'll take a closer look at a few more of his swings later today.

What's his batting average and obp? Is he pretty consistant in his hitting?

He looks great. But he needs a little bit more of and upper body load. Front shoulder should come in towards the catcher. At heel plant, he will be all torqued up.

His batting has been consistent this season. batted .484 with obp .594
We would like to work on getting more extra base hits. His weakness is breaking balls on the away and up. He likes to hit fastblls in that area though.

We are in orange county area, so lots of summer ball oppurtunities.

4 more clips to peruse, I've got a game run too...haven't looked at them too closely but it does appear that sometimes he coils his hips and loads his hands as he strides and sometimes the hands kind of stay put as he strides.

Very nice. I like that inward turn of is front hip -- nicely coordinated with the back leg, and generates a lot of power.

To add to the other's comments, I think the back elbow is dropping just a little early -- often before the rear hips starts to move. That tends to lead to pushing the hands out toward the pitcher (and he sorta does that on a couple of swings) rather than using the wrists to snap the bathead around at the last instant.

Yes, it appears to make the swing a little loopy.

2 cents:

mis-timing top half.
top hand elbow too far from body @ contact. out in front.

possible cause: lower body too open @ heel plant.

possible solution: in stance - leave front foot where it is, move rear foot off plate some. stride straight (not open as you now do).

if you could get a behind the pitcher view during batting practice you could check his swing plane

I cleaned up this thread. It got WAY off topic....

Exactly what I am seeing.... If you concentrate only on his lower half in the clips, you will see that he loads a litte but for the most part just explodes forward. If he would load that rear hip joint and introduce the running start, like Mud said, "watch out!!" A lot of good things happening with his swing....

It's similar to Aaron Rowand's swing

http://hittingillustrated.com/library/Rowand11.gif

But notice the stretch between Rowand's back hip and his hands during the stride. Your son doesn't have that.

Wow.....great potential here. But like some of the other posters...in order to turn his swing into "elite" he needs to relax his hands back for a longer time. When you stop the video half way, his hands are leading the swing. If he could learn to keep them back as long as possible and let the hips come first..look out. Just give him that cue in bp on the field so you can see the difference.
