Al Brancato, a shortstop who spent most of his career with the Philadelphia Athletics turned 90 today. He is the youngest living player who played major league baseball before 1940. There are currently 23 surviving players who played at least part of their career in the 1930s.
Tony Malinosky is the oldest and is due to turn 100 later this year on October 5. Lonnie Frey, second in age, holds the distinction of having played in the majors the longest time ago. He debuted in 1933 and he and Phil Cavarreta, who debuted in MLB in '34, are the only living players who played in the majors before 1935.
I've listed the players' chief posiiton and his years of major league service. If a player has already reached his birthday in 2009 I've simply listed his age as a whole number (ie: Ace Parker - 97) those who have not reached their birthday yet this year are listed with a .5 behind their age. ( ie: Bob Feller is due to turn 91 this Nov. 3, so I've listed him as 90.5).
