The latest rumors regarding Padres ace Jake Peavy has the White Sox trying to pry him out of San Diego for prospects. The Padres are in full-on rebuilding mode, with a new team owner trying to mold a team more to his liking. They are said to be looking to acquire at least one high-quality middle-infield prospect in return for Peavy, along with (I'm sure) a few other decent players.

I'm posting this in the Tigers forum because I ask you, why not Detroit? Sure, we have plenty of RH pitchers already, but would there be a better 1-2 punch (certainly not Sabathia-Burnett) in the big leagues than Peavy-Verlander? Both are young fireballers, and with a good offense behind him Peavy would be a lock for 20 wins per year, as well as a very low ERA and WHIP and high K's. I'm not sure if we have the prospects left to give San Diego, especially a high-end middle-infielder (Cale Iorg?), but like I did with Miguel Cabrera, I'm advocating doing whatever it takes to bring this guy to Motown.

He's locked up long-term already, at what is nowadays a very reasonable price for a top-3 SP. His salaries, courtesy of Cot's Baseball Contracts: 2009: $8m, 2010: $15m, 2011: $16m, 2012: $17m, 2013: $22m club option ($4m buyout)

Thoughts? Another racosun pipe-dream?

*EDIT* Another very good reason to try and snag Peavy would be to keep him from the Sox. We tend to do very lousy against high-end RH SP's, and Peavy sure is one of those.

According to multiple sports new agencies, the Padres and Sox have agreed to a deal for Peavy, and are now awaiting Peavy to okay the deal. He has full no-trade powers, and has stated in the past that he'd like to stay in the NL. We'll see what happens, but apparantly the Padres demand for a top-flight middle-infielder have waned, and will now receive up to four pitchers instead. The Sox do have young Cuban 3B Dayan Viciedo in AAA, but must have balked at including him in the deal.

As to your original inquiry, R@cosun, I'd tend to be against such a trade for the Tigers for the mere fact that we've got to get younger and can't afford to trade prospects. Maggs, Guillen, and Polanco are possibly playing their last seasons in the D.

Peavy will turn 28 in 10 days, so it's not like he's an old-timer just yet. But even so, I don't think we have what it takes to get Peavy from San Diego. Not only that, but it's VERY doubtful Peavy would accept a trade to Detroit. He's pretty dead-set on staying in the NL, as proven by him using his no-trade clause to block today's proposed White Sox trade.

So yeah, this is just another of raco's pipe dreams. Dang.

No, but he'd be one torn rotator cuff away from making it one of the worst trades in Tigers history, perhaps plunging the team into another prolonged Dark Ages once the present aging veteran core turns ineffective. Trading for high-priced pitchers, especially between leagues, is an iffy proposition.

Injuries can happen to anyone at any time. Your theory can play out with Verlander as well. He's certainly going to get a higher-priced contract than Peavy when his time comes, and then what if he blows out his rotator cuff? Would it be the worst contract extension in team history? Or what if Cabrera ruptured his Achilles? Does that become the worst trade in team history? I see your point, but you've got to take risk to be a great team. Sitting on your hands and watching your division rivals take that next step that leapfrogs your team won't always cut it.

I do like Jake Peavey in Detroit but, no way they can afford him. Actually, I hope that Dontrelle Willlis can put together about 5-6 good games so the Tigers can unload him on someone who wants to take a chance with him.

If anything, the pen is still scary. The Tigers just need to stick with what they have and look to get younger and faster next season. The SPs weren't so bad as the defence let them down so much last season. Jeremy Bonderman is likely two seasons away but, there other SPs are coming along.
