I play slow pitch softball and the only thing I am concerned about is bat speed. I want to be able to hit the ball as hard as possible. Bat quickness is obviously not of concern.
I see a lot of problems and if I can fix these problems I feel like I can be a very good hitter. This ugly swing got me an opposite field HR last year so I know that if I can just get my hips more involved and use my body more to swing the bat then my arms then I can really be that much better.
I can't believe how bad my swing looks in slow motion. I am all arms. My front leg doesn't extend until after contact is made. I have no idea what I can do to improve these things. I have the time and energy and mental focus. It's just hard being your own coach because you can't see what you are doing. I need some help. I am willing to work VERY hard to get my swing better. What do you guys recommend?? Thank you all so very much.

Don't stand so straight legged. Your front knee will lock out when you use your hips.

youre also not loading that back hip at all, you just stride and swing.

hands drop n roll "fire drill swing" bat gets below your hands behing u and rolls or comes up infront of u. u must start your hands direct so the bat stays up behind you and will drop just before contact. your lead wrist gives out on the first few inches of you swing gets L shaped or week some of the cause of your drop n chop. back knee needs to get inside the back foot and back foot needs to get goin when the front foot drops... you dont move till after contact

I know this sounds like a stupid question but I am serious: How do you load the rear hip correctly?? Any drills??
Thanx for your input.

not enough periods in this man!! LOL.
I can somewhat understand what you are saying but I am interested in everything that you mean here.
Bolded means I lost you. I understand my lead wrist gave out early in my swing then the rest I got confused...

1. Your hips should turn inward when your hands and shoulders go back.
2. Your hips are open when your front foot touches.
Fixing 1. may fix 2.

didn't realize my hips were opened when my front foot touched.
So basically I have no inward turn of my hips whatsoever?? How should I practice doing this and making it automatic?? Should I turn the hips in as I load back??

i'll definetley try to do that cubsphill. i have a hard time doing this and i think it's because of my weak legs. i think if i strengthened my legs it could be easier.

your legs are not weak! your lower body mechanics are just off a bit. i agree with what they are telling you however you must improve your hand path. start your swing with just your bottom hand (no bat). the wrist must stay straight as you swing or the knuckles stay above the wrist. in your case the wrist will bend like an upside down v or the wrist gets above the knuckles. this is causing your bat to get below the level of your hands way to early. when the bat drops that early in the swing the barrel and hands will roll into contact. bat speed is lost due to the fact that the hands and barrel change direction as you try to get through the ball.
basically your swing path needs to be like a smiley face when yours is like a sad face..... down up not up down

Very interesting....I did hurt my left wrist a couple years ago swinging and maybe I am "afraid to use" it. I also hold the bat very light in both hands because I know that you are supposed to hold it very light to help with bat speed. Should I hold it very light JUST in the top hand and have more pressure and a stronger grip with the bottom hand??
I am releasing this wrist into flexion very early in the swing?? So basically I have to maintain wrist extension from launch into contact or should my wrist be neutral??
I gaurantee this problem developed because of my wrist injury and afraid to reinjury it.
