The Brewers' Jason Kendall became one of a small number of players whose primary position was catcher to reach the 2,000 hit mark on May 18, 2009.
On the same night the Rockies' Todd Helton hit a ball past Atlanta's shortstop, Yunel Escobar, that was ruled an error. If ruled a hit, it would have been Helton's 2,000th.
Rockies' manager Clint Hurdle said that a ball that is hit that hard past the fielder, a "laser" that the fielder had almost no time to react to and that was untouched by the fielder, in a great majority of cases is ruled a hit. Hurdle said he planned to have a discussion with the official scorer to appeal the scoring ruling before today's (May 19) game.

Houston's Ivan Rodriguez is the all-time leader with about 2640 hits, the most-ever for a Catcher. He has a lifetime .301 batting average with exactly 300 home runs for 19 seasons. (Currently With 2208 games as a catcher, he needs just 19 games as of this morning to become the all-time iron-man for games played as a catcher: Carlton Fisk with 2226 games caught is the current record-holder). Only four players have caught 2,000 games. They are Fisk, Bob Boone, the former record holder, and Rodriguez and Gary Carter, in that order. Kendall with 1,810 games caught could one day become the fifth member of the 2,000 Games at Catcher Club.
Besides Rodriguez and Fisk other catchers with at least 2,000 hits include Gary Carter, Yogi Berra, Ted Simmons, Johnny Bench. Mike Piazza and Joe Torre. Piazza has the most home runs as a catcher. 396 of his 429 home runs came when he was playing catcher. Fisk is second in home runs.
The player with the highest lifetime average at catcher, with at least 1600 games played is Bill Dickey with a .313 lifetime average. He finished just short of 2,000 hits with 1969. He was a 30's & 40's great, the last Yankees' regular catcher before Berra.
