After watching the piece on espn about the sd state pitcher, I was wondering if anyone could tell me how many players played in the big leagues without playing in the minors.

David Clyde spend 1973 and 1974 in the majors but did play in the minors in 1975 to 1977.

Except for a 3 game rehab stint in 2005, John Olerud never played in the minors.

And I'm pretty sure Eddie Gaedel never played in the minors. :D

Most of the Japanese players, like Ichiro, Dice-K, etc, never played in the U.S. minors.

There are many players who never played in the minor leagues -- Al Kaline for one.

Here is a list of those who were selected in the free agent draft and went directly to the major leagues before ever playing in the minor leagues.

Most of the players on that list did eventually play in the minors. It looks like only Bob Horner and Dave Winfield are the only two major leaguers to be drafted and never play in the minors.

I think Sandy Koufax may have gone straight to the Major Leagues as well.

Nady had a deal in which he would go to the majors before the minors. He was drafted in June, but he didn't sign until September. He went to the majors and singled in his only at bat, then started in the minors the following season.

When Winfield signed, he had a deal in which he would start in the majors. I believe it included one road trip with the understanding he would go to the minors. He did so well that manager Don Zimmer decided to keep him in the majors.

Ernie Banks, Al Kaline, Dick Groat and Johnny Antonelli are four that come readily to mind.
