Hey everyone. Draft #5 has been over for a short time. Splinter and I were wondering if anyone was up for #6. It will still be hosted by Splinter, but not for a week or two. I would just like to get everyone rounded up. I'm sure Splinter will establish the official rules later. The criteria is "best season."
Anyone interested?

Hey guys. I just got back from Jamaica this morning. I will be hosting the draft again. I'll get the draft rules and whatnot probably Sunday night/Monday sometime as I will be going to a couple college grad parties. So far it looks like we got 4 people signed up and hopefully we can get 4 more (using the criteria of best season/career year, anything less than 8 teams will make our teams really stacked, but I'm ok with that because it'll make the voting even harder and we had 6 teams in the last draft).
I have never done one of these, but I have my summers off....
Count me in, but you have to promise not to take Steve Garvey in the first round before I can sign him.
For if you do...

Draft Order:
1.
2.
3.
4.
5.
6.
7.
Teams:
25 players like usual... We will have a DH. You can pick your own manager and stadium whenever you want.
Draft Time Limit:
We'll go at on our pace since it's only 6 teams, but I would like to make it like 8 hours with dead time like we done the past couple times.
Criteria:
We'll be using single best season by whatever criteria you go by. This is for position players as well as starting pitching and relievers. They have to play the whatever position they played the most that year you pick. The player can also play different position if they played each position at least 60 games that year... For example, if you pick Babe Ruth 1921- he's a LF... 1924- he's a RF... 1923 or 1926 he's a LF/RF... Does that make sense??? I am willing to change this if needed. Also if you pick a player that played mostly DH in the year you pick, he can only play DH (for example, Milton Bradley 2008) but anyone can go in the DH spot. I was thinking this for the starting players only and bench players can play wherever they played in their career (cuz you need backups in all positions). You can also change the years for a player for whatever reason (changing position/better defense/etc...), but when you make your last pick, the years are final and you can't change them.
Requirements:
Only MLB players. Ignore "steroid issues". I think everybody knows how well each players does on defense. Let go with 1890 to 2008 when picking for the years.
Trade:
You can trade players.
Roster Page:
I'll put one up right before we start the draft. Also, I would like us to put like a summary at the end of our roster page if you want. It's kinda gonna be an analysis on how/why/what stat or list you went by on draft and also why you think your team is the best... You can do that part whenever you want, but I would require it would be done before the manager/stadium draft is completed.
Tournament Poll:
As for the poll at the end for the draft... I was thinking of a poll with all 6 teams and let voters pick the best team.
This post will be the post where we have everything that we decided on for each part of the draft/tournament. I will make this the first post in the draft thread so we can look at it. If anybody has any questions or want to make changes, ask in the discussion thread... Good luck to everyone and Lets have some fun doing this.
This is what I usually have for the drafts we have done in the past... Let me know if we need to change anything...

If you guys are still looking for more people, I'll do it.
Can we do this with at least ten people? Having six is asking us to name the best 150 players (with respect to even positioning) in baseball history.
I think I can do that in about two hours by myself.
Wait for at least ten managers!

We can... But it also might take another month or longer to get the other 3 unless you know others that want to join. I mean we had 6 for like a month now and we finally got 1 more to join. It's been awhile since the last draft that I'm ready to start again. I'll wait to see what the others think...
I don't care how many we get. I would like to get at least 10 as well, but sometime when we get that many, usually, we get 1 or 2 people to either really slack off or quit during the draft.
Yeah I already got my rankings pretty much done (except for RPs)...
Please count me out if there are less than ten managers drafting their team.
I already know who the Inner Circle guys are....
It would be interesting if we all had two teams, and we were forced to draft no more than two hitters in a row for each team, or some other such rule.
Or better yet, if we have seven, have two divisions and one is the American League and the other is the National League. So it will be up to me to decide when I think a guy like Frank Robinson will go, then decide if I want him for my National League team or wait until my American League team draft (hoping he will be there...)
Thoughts?

I can do it as long as there is a 24 hour window. Typically I would pick immediately, but if I am gone for 1 day, I don't want to get passed up.
Also, would we be using peak years, consecutive years, or entire careers?
As far as an "idea" what about limiting the pool somehow.
We could use hall of fame eligible players who were not elected in their first year of eligibility?
Or we could each draft 2 teams. We could each draft 1 team using exclusive19th century guys and modern guys (active guys plus anyone who played at least a day in the 80s or beyond) and another team of guys who played from 1900 to 1979 (at least 1 game) and NeLeaguers.
Or we could just each draft 2 teams-but you can't trade directly with yourself.
This could get very interesting, to a point. Perhaps rather than a NL/AL split, perhaps we can go with something like before WW2 and after WW2. Maybe one team populated with players born before 1925 and another team populated with players born in 1925 and after. That would eliminate the question of how to use someone like Dave Winfield or Frank Robinson.
It could be a snake draft, and force me to choose from one era. The results could be skewed if I decided to draft one team before starting the other.
So the snake would be 14 teams deep...
thoughts?
I take it this project is dead in the water?

It wouldn't be if we go ahead with the 7 people who signed up already. I don't know how much longer it would take to get 3 more. We'll still do the best season for this draft.
In the next draft, we can do one of your ideas though. I like all of them though. It's just we have decided on best season awhile during the last draft. Hope that's alright with you and you'll stay for this draft...
Please count me out if this is based on just one season, or involves less than ten teams.

Don't worry about your baseball history. It helps, but what really matters is the research you put in, and your drafting ability (like guessing when all the best CFers might get snatched up, or making your team have some sort of R/L balance in your lineup, or making sure you have a couple southpaws for your rotation and 'pen).

Ummm... yeah we can do that. I don't know what the restrictions should be though. We can go something like only stadiums from WW2 to 2009. That'll probably cover almost all of them.

What do you mean by play time? you mean like to qualify for a position? I was going with 60 games cuz at most that person can play is 2 positions. Bench players can play wherever they played in their career (you need the versatility) Also, we will allow 2009 season in this draft now... It's been enough games that you can draft them at face value.
Can we trade while the draft is still going? Can we trade draft picks?
Yeah that's fine with me. I got no problem with either one. You can trade players/picks/etc...

Did you try to contact all the people who were in for the first time you tried draft #6? I'd assume some of them would still be up for it.
BTW - are you allowing LF/RF interchangeability?

I'd be up for it.
On positional requirements, I'd be up for LF/RF being interchangeable and letting players that have played multiple positions in their careers move down the defensive spectrum if they didn't play that position in the year you want to use.
For example. I draft Ty Cobb and want to use his 1917 season. For that season, he's a CFer, but I'd still have the option of moving him to right because he's played more than enough games there in his career to qualify. On the other hand, if I draft Pujols and want to use the 2009 season, I can't move him to third or left, because that's moving to a more difficult position than first. My reasoning is if a guy could play first, or left field, or whatever later in his career, he certainly would've been capable of doing so earlier in his career if the situation warranted it.

Yeah you can draft guys from any season really. Like your example, Frank Thomas played every game that season but it was shorten. You can pick that season if you want, but it is a short season and people will knock it down a little since he would have to play 30 more games so his OPS+ would most likely come down. If it was me picking Frank Thomas, I would pick this season because most likely it would've still been better than his 2nd best season even if he played 30 or so more games.

I have no problem with that. You can do LF/RF. One requirement would be how many games in their career would the player have to qualify for another position? 300? 500?
