Does anybody know what these circles are beside home plate are for? You see them in a lot of older ballparks like Fenway Park here. Could they possibly be old on-deck cirlces? It seems a little too close to the plate though..?

They are called Fungo circles. They are spots for coaches to stand when they hit ground balls to the infielders during the pre-game batting practice

They're coach's fungo circles. This gives the coach a different place to stand to work on things with his fielders.

Somewhere on the Yankee Stadium Pre-Renovation thread there are pictures from about the 50's-60's showing quite a few behind home plate in different spots.

most of the time now, there are covers put down over the grass around home plate during batting practice to protect the grass, thus making these dirt circles somewhat unnecessary.

Ohhh okay that makes sense. I should know that seeing as I take infield warm-up 5 days a week haha. Thank you.

OYS had quite a few, and the most radical home plate dirt area. I have no idea what it's called.
