If Randy Johnson had a comfortable lead when he was trying for his 300th win would you let him try to go the distance if you were managing? The majority of pitchers who reached the milestone in recent years were already in the dugout when one of their bullpen staff recorded the final out (Most Recently: Tom Glavine). It is certainly more dramatic if the 300 game winner gets the final out himself, kind of hammering home what a great pitcher he is. (As a Phillies Fan, I can certainly remember watching on TV the night Steve Carlton got his 300th win at the end of the 1983 season and I recall being disappointed when after going eight innings he didn't come out of the dugout to finish it in the ninth. For the record: Closer Al Holland got the Save for him.)
The last 300 game winner I remember who pitched a complete game in his
300th win was Gaylord Perry, who went the distance for the Seatle Mariners against the mighty N.Y. Yankees, who were the defending American League Champs, in May 1982.
Johnson had a litle tendenitis in
Spring Training and had to build up his arm strength slowly after the arm problem and a missed turn in he rotation. His two longest performances have been last night for win #297 and one other occasion where he went seven innings both times. His last Complete Game came on the last day of last season Sept. 28, 2008 for Arizona, for career win #295. It was his 100th career Complete Game.

what baseball fan wouldn't want to see johnson go the distance in his 300th, but i am interpreting the "right" situation as the "pefect" situation. there'll be four more months of baseball this season and johnson's health is paramount for him to continue doing what he loves - playing baseball... and winning.

I'm sure the weather will enter into it also if you're looking for ideal conditions for a complete game. A cold night by the Bay in San Francisco would be out as would a chilly night somewhere in the North East. A day game with nice Spring weather, comfortable, warm, but not too warm Temps, before the really scorching hot summer weather arrives, would be ideal and the best case scenario for such an attempt.

take away last night's drizzle and fog and cold and i expect that johnson would certainly have gone into the 8th for a 300th win.
a quick inning, and he'd be back out there for the 9th with maybe 104-110 pitches thrown.

It really depends on a lot of factors, but I really doubt RJ could go 9 innings ever again.

I don't see why you'd say that! Johnson had two Complete Games last year, including one on the last day of the season where he had at least 10 strikeouts and the Diamondbacks had to win break a tie to win it for him in the bottom of the ninth. RJ was pumped and was probably ready to go out and pitch the 10th inning if neccessary.
